By "not directly scanned," I meant I have to hunt for it on the display, but that's time-consuming. It can take several tries before the screen will advance. I may have to hop around to find the right entry.

Same here, the machines don't always work correctly, and the attendant has override authority. They were also needed to check signatures on credit cards, but that's not needed now you have to use a PIN or PayWave here.
