Ernie Banks, Brent Sopel representing sports organizations at Chicago's Gay Pride parade - Jeff Pearlman - SI.com

Ernie Banks is as big a star in the Chicago Sports sky as there is. Well maybe Michael Jordon is bigger but Ernie has been doing it longer.

Now Ernie is representing the Chicago Cubs in the Gay Pride Parade in Chicago and he will be sitting atop the Chicago Cub float. That a professional team has a float in a Gay Pride Parade is amazing. That a conservative franchise like the play only in the daytime Cubbies should do this is a real step forward.

Now tell me, has anyone ever seen Chgoboy and Ernie Banks in the same room at the same time?

The Cubs have actually had a good relationship with the gay community for many years. This year's Gay Day at Wrigley Field was the 15th(?).

Wrigley Field is, after all, perched right at the edge of the Boystown area. It's literally across the street.

This is, however, the first time the Cubs have participated in the Pride parade.

Longtime Cubs fans recognize that this is as close as the Cubs will ever come to having a parade of their own.

The Cubs are really not conservative. In addition to the close relationship they have with their gay neighbors, they have hosted "Out At The Ballgame" for the last 10 years. According to the Chicago Free Press, it is the original event that brought together Major League Baseball and the LGBT community and the longest-running event of its kind. Like the City of Chicago, the Cubbies are very gay friendly.
