!!!!usa!!!!

I'm very glad to see that USA made it to the next round. While I could not watch the match at work, I followed it on line. Though interestingly enough, about 200 people packed Union Jack's pub near my office to watch both matches simultaneously. This info was given to me by two of my co-workers who cut out in time to catch the last half of both matches.

That England advances is good but still I would have like to seen Slovenia move onward. It appears that England may have dealt with their "issues" and moved on to actually performing. But the next round will tell the tale on that issue.

USA USA USA :D

True! I am glad they both proceeded. I was almost sure that England can beat Slovenia by one goal and they did. But that is not at all enough to even beat Ghana (I think they will play against them) at the knockout stage. I would not want to see Slovenia, it was already a miracle that they made it to the World Cup. All in all, I am very glad that the US team got qualified to the next round, I am proud of them... USA!!!!!!!! :)

The US plays Ghana at 2:30 ET on Saturday. England plays Germany at 10:00 ET on Sunday. Again, USA needs to look out for some hard play from the Ghanans.

The US team has a real advantage over Ghana, I hope they will succeed! And I can just hope that England will proceed, however it is going to be a real tough match against Germany.

BIG surprise!!!

Italy did not proceed to the knockout stage... They lost their last match against Slovakia 3-2... What a surprise!!! After France, Italy can be also ashamed by their performance... I would have never thought that Slovakia is going to proceed from this group... However I feel sorry for New Zealand because they were pretty good and played very well, unfortunately it was not enough this time...but that is why this sport is so interesting... :)

This is the best assessment I've read of the entire European abdication. Thanks for posting it.

The key statement, for me at least, was in this passage:

"But there is something strange at this World Cup. It is as if the Europeans have no stomach, no desire, no professional pride in staying on a continent new to them. It is almost as if they had the jet engines warming up before they arrived — and England did only marginally better in its group, which also looked, on paper, to be a comfortable warm-up.

Thank God for the South Americans. Thank goodness Lionel Messi is here with appetite aflame for the Cup. Thank all of the teams from the Americas — yes, including the United States, the hardest-working athletes of Round 1.

Because those two continents, North and South America, care about the World Cup, because they seem able to adapt to Africa’s daily surprises, we have a worthwhile tournament."

Yes, thank God for the South Americans who at least showed up to play international level football. Brazil is a given in any tournament but if you look at Argentina and Paraguay you see teams that have cohesion and an ability to play aggressively. (Though I still say the Argentines are afraid of what Maradona will do to them if the lose. LOL)

The US team has been phenomenal with its play. Thanks to Donovan the team has an experienced lead that seems to be there at just the right moment. And let's not forget Tim Howard, goalkeeper. He's been pushing and directing the team on the field almost to the level of Bradley's coaching. Could this be the year for the USA? I don't know but today at 2:30 I'll be glued to the set to find out.

Just remember in the 2006 Fifa World Cup, USA got knocked by Ghana. In today's match, even though Ghana will be without it's star player Michael Essien, Ghana still has a stronger team and could possibly beat USA again.

As for England, they dont really stand a chance in beating Germany. In this 2010 Fifa World Cup, England's squad have been playing really crappy football and it's a terrible shame that the players dont seem to have their hearts into the matches, especially Wayne Rooney. I'd love to see Germany get knocked of the world cup by England, unfortunately I dont think it's going to happen and certainly not this time around.

Ghana has controled the ball much better than the USA. But the US has consistently gotten better under pressure. They sure as hell need to play better in the second half. Right now it looks like Ghana is going to advance for sure.

Despite making it to overtime, the US looks like a goner. Ghana 2 US 1 two minutes into overtime.

Yep. :(

I believe they will now play Uruguay in the next round. Viva Uruguay!!

I'm very proud of the team. However, it's like they don't show up for the match till the second half. The squad has a horrible habit of giving up a goal within the first 30 minutes every time. I agree with one of the commentators today who stated that they need to concentrate on the game and not on the spectacle. They seem to be in awe of just being on the pitch then get their game on by the second half.

Fortunately, they have just enough younger players who've now had a WC experience. By 2014 those guys will be veterans and maybe, just maybe, the performance will be even better. It's only a matter of time before the US captures a World Cup. In the interval this particular team can hold their heads high and know they out performed Italy, England, and France for certain and held their own against every team they met.

And to make it even better for future WC matches, Ghana is now the arch rival for the USA. From now on in every international meeting beating Ghana will be the goal for every squad. That can be highly motivating for a group of players no matter how long it takes.

Stunning World Cup 2010 Upset - Brazil Out

I'm shocked that Brazil was knocked out of contention for the WC by the Netherlands squad. What a stunning upset of the supposed front runner for contention. Brazil has "owned" a top slot for decades in these matches. It's always been an assumption at least since the 1970s that they would power through to the finals. To be knocked out by the Orangemen has got to be a stinging situation for the squad. I understand the coach has already resigned.

On the upside, USA arch rival Ghana was trounced by Uruguay today on penalty kicks. Talk about a duel to the death. To see the emotion on the Ghanan squad faces when they went down was gut wrenching in one respect, that Africa was knocked out of finals. But on the other hand to see the squad that did the same to the USA twice get it was great satisfaction.

Now will the Argentine squad defeat the Germans on Saturday? And if they don't what will Maradona do to them if they lose? IMO this is the critical match right now as it will set up one of them for final victory. Though I could be wrong, this has been the most unpredictable set of matches in my memory.

Viva Argentina!!
