It's actually pretty common. With the lights in their eyes, they can't see the edge of the stage.

Aww poor fella...that sucks, a once in a lifetime experience. So embarrassing--and to make matters worse it's saved for perpetuity on video and youtube!

I am naturally clumsy. Thankfully, both my high school and college graduations were held at huge venues where the stairs were out of audience view and well-lit.
