I have never been to Golden Corral except once a long time ago. I went there after work today and I noticed that you pay for food in advance. I didn't have any cash on me so I couldn't leave any tip for the waitress who cleared my dirty dishes off the table and filled my water cup. So is it ok not to tip the waitress at a buffet restaurant like Golden Corral when you pay in advance? What do you guys do? Next time I will remember to take some cash with me. I felt bad.

I once said to Cooper "I'm never sure when it's appropriate to tip" he said "It's ALWAYS appropriate to tip". That's why he's so popular as we make our way around the Big Apple. Cooper knows best, lol!

I think it's appropriate to leave a tip for people in the service industry. But, IMHO, the amount of the tip should be determined not just by the quality of service but the level.

In a buffet environment, the table servers don't provide the same level of service as a non-buffet establishment. So, I usually don't tip them the 18-20% that I normally do. But, I do leave them a tip (providing they do a good job of keeping my drink filled and the bread bowl replenished).

In my community it is typical for buffet-style places to collect money in advance. But, I've also seen people ask (when paying) to increase the credit card amount and receive the difference in cash for a tip. I believe most businesses wouldn't have a problem with this.

Sadly it's usually the people who make the lowest salary who get the lowest tips. I wish restaurants would just add the tip to the bill like most places in Europe.

I know

but some waiters make a decent living if they work at high end restaurants. :)

Service Charges

In the UK, most restaurants add a 10-15% 'discretionary service charge' to your bill automatically. In practice, hardly anyone refuses to pay it and there is a big scene if you do. I have always disagreed with the practice. I think the tip should reflect the quality of the service and if you receive bad service you should be able to reflect this in the tip without making a scene. Also, many tourists are unaware that service has already been added to their bill and end up tipping twice. Furthermore, companies are not obliged to give all, or indeed any, of the service charge to their employees and often keep a portion for themselves. However, at least the UK did bring in new regulations last year prohibiting companies from using tips or service charges to make up a minimum salary.

You put the tip on the credit card slip, they give you the cash, you put the cash on the table. BTW: when cash is in plain sight the service improves.

I see

thanks Daddy.. You are so sweet. :) The receipt do not have a tip line though so I just write it on an empty space? I will ask about it to them next time. Thanks. :)

I don't know about Golden Corral, but a buffet style restaurant where I eat regularly has a receptacle next to the cash register where one can leave cash tips. I assume they are distributed equally, since it is impossible to know what was left for whom.

I am pleased that there are some among us who can afford the calorie content of going to a buffet. I cannot, but very infrequently I partake anyway. Shame on me.

Tips are so individualized as to make general comments almost silly or unnecessary. Those who please us or who serve us properly and, especially above and beyond, regardless of the venue should receive something as recompense. Striving to make it personal and to the correct recipient is imperative although not a cause for suicide. :)

Best regards,
