Having finally succumbed to Netflix, I am seeking recommendations for movies involving gay topics. When I say best, I mean enjoyable. I like eating Out, but I also Liked Longtime Companion.

So may I please have some suggestions? Straight movies with hot guys could also qualify...;)

A favorite gay comedy of mine was "But I am a Cheer Leader". A period piece I like and although it is drama was "Farewell My Concubine".

From an earlier thread on the same subject (http://www.companyofmen.org/showthread.php?t=45581&highlight=movie):

Angels in America

Bound

Boys Don't Cry

Edge of 17

Get Real

Parting Glances

Torch Song Trilogy

Transamerica

Cabaret

Color Purple

Gods and Monsters

Ma Vie en Rose

Monster

Mysterious Skin

Opposite of Sex, The

Times of Harvey Milk

and also:

AKA

Crying Game

Dog Day Afternoon

Flawless

Fried Green Tomatoes

L.I.E.

Living End, The

Love and Human Remains

My Own Private Idaho

Tales of the City

Together Alone.

And then these are great films with minor gay themes:

As Good as it Gets

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Drowning Mona

Election

Happiness

Happy Endings

Silkwood

Waiting for Guffman

For what it's worth...

My recommendation for a must see movie is The Loved One based on the Evelyn Waugh novel. The film was released in 1965, staring Robert Morse, Jonathan Winters, Rod Steiger, Roddy McDowall and John Geilgud plus a host of cameos. The tag line: “The motion picture with something to offend everyone.” It’s a satire of Hollywood and the funeral industry from the view point of a British expatriate. Arguably it could be considered an anti-establishment film way ahead of its time, the critics hated it.

This film is not for everyone and certainly has some lousy editing in places. But Rod Steiger’s performance as the obviously closeted mortician Mr. Joyboy is not to be missed. The sight gag with Liberace is hysterical. ;)

I just got done watching this movie on gay.com called Ciao. I liked it and the Italian guy is not bad to look at either!

Ciao

I have to agree with josephga that the majority of gay films aren't really that good as film. Try Latter Days. Of the great many coming of age flicks, that one seemed to work for me more than most.

Happy Viewing!!

I am lucky to have a wonderful video store in the gay village here.

While I've watched my share of many that are yawners, I've listed some of my favourites. Some are classics that I'm sure you've seen, and others are little gems that I'm sure suffer from limited distribution.

If you click on the title, it will link to the IMDB page to give you all the specifics on the movie.

Enjoy!:)

Wilde

Pricilla, Queen of the Desert

Normal

Death at a Funeral

Colour Me Kubrick...a True...ish Story

Latter Days

Priest

Beautiful Thing

Angels in America

Jeffrey

The Boys in the Band

La cage aux folles

La cage aux folles II

La cage aux folles III

Philadelphia

Rent

Mambo Italiano

Let me state up front that my taste in gay films is decidedly low brow. With that caveat clearly stated here are my recommendations in alphabetical order:

Circuit

Latter Days

Mambo Italiano

Noah’s Arch (first season ONLY)

The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Trick

Slightly more high brow BUT only slightly

Get Real is a great coming of age film. And the boys are so darn cute!

My Personal Favs...

1. Brokeback Mountain (simply the best for me)

2. Latter Days (hot boys and it made me think a lot about the complexities of faith, religion & being gay)

3. Boy Culture (sexy male cast. It deals poignantly with the life of a rentboy)

4. Birdcage (just plain ol' funny stuff)

Two films with gay twists that I like are, Borstal Boy, a sentimental but dark film about a young Irish freedom fighter who gets sent to reform school, and Pyscho Beach Party, Charles Busch's campy spoof of 60's surf movies.

If you like Foreign movies, try an Italian one from about 10 years ago, the original title is "Le fate ignoranti", they translated into "His secret life", Netflix has it and it's very good!

I also love the hunky excellent Spanish actor Javier Bardem, and in his two movies where he portrays a gay character he is absolutely fantastic!

Both in Netflix, the first originally is in English, the second is in Spanish and subtitled:

-Before Night Falls

-Second Skin

Most gay movies are formulaic. There are some gems.

Apartment Zero (with Hart Bochner, woof)

Edge of Seventeen - very realistic for it's time

Beautiful Thing - One of the few gay movies I left with heart uplifted.

Another Country

Not a movie but if you can get on DVD - PBS Series of Brideshead Revisited with Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons. The first half is all about the love of two men for each other.

I definitely enjoyed "His Secret Life" and of course also ANYTHING Almodovar is involved in! ;)

Also for the Javier Bardem/Penelope Cruise Fans there is a Movie called "Jamon-Jamon" (Spanish Subtitles) which they made together when they were in their Teens!

Bardem has a few Nude Scenes..A Hunk also in his Younger days!

I had a VHS Copy at one time, but I am sure it made it to DVD Hopefully! :D
