I went to bed particularly early, for me that is, on New Year's Eve into New Year's Day. While asleep I had an experience which I am hardpressed to call a dream but am equally inept at deciding what else to call it.

WHile asleep, I was confronted with a bright white light which blinded me for a second. Any awareness of anything else stopped. I found myself drifting toward this light. I was still unable to see but was able to hear my late wife asking why I was there. Before I could respond, I heard her say that I needed to go back and take care of the dogs. I awoke feeling unusually well.

Now I have talked to people who have had near death experiences and in fact my own father related to me his near death experience in an ER when he was left unwatched and I came in to his room to find him gray and not breathing and was able to revive him. All of those experiences were in a setting of illness or trauma.

Has anyone here ever had a near death experience? Has anyone here heard of an experience such as mine? Should I chalk it up as an unusually vivid dream and let it go at that?

For those who feel compelled to suggest I seek out medical care, I have already made arrangements. This was done prior to this experience and was done as a routine not because of any feeling of illness.

I hope you are ok. It's a good thing that your late wife seems to watch over you. :)

I hope she doesn't get to see him again soon, though. We like having P-Kow here with us!

Serious Response

I have NOT personally had a near-death experience. However, my mother did have experiences such as yours.

A few weeks before she died she had a couple of "bright light" experiences but, initially, did not hear anyone in the light. Then, about a week before she died, she'd wake up from a sound sleep and start carrying on conversations with departed loved ones in the room.

During one of my mother's "talking" experiences, my sister was in the room and asked her who she was talking with. She looked at my sister with a look of surprise and was amazed that my sister couldn't see the group of dead relatives at the foot of her bed.

I was also surprised to hear my mother provide "updates" on what these visiting relatives told her about other departed friends and loved one. From what she related, they apparently have a very active life on the other side.

I certainly don't feel that these experiences are only for the "near dead". I suspect you'll be around for our enjoyment for quite some time. But, I'm a firm believer that people of all ages have had similar experiences to yours.

Next week's lotto numbers......

While I remain mostly sceptical of these happenings in general, nothing would change my mind faster than either of the experiences of pk or 1F's mom.

In the meantime, pk, if you should wander that way again, see if you can get next week's Lotto numbers. I promise to give you 70% of my winnings.;)

All kidding aside, I hope you are fine, pk. Let us know what the doctor chalks it up to when you see him.

I hope this was for you just a brief visit with a loved one. either by memory or otherwise. I do not claim to say we have or have not had visits from beyond the grave, but, I do believe we have these visits. Yes I have had one of these dreams and no I was not ill. But they usually came during depression for me over the loss or missing of a loved one.

Is it possible something triggered a feeling of nostalgia and/or loss more accute than normal for your departed life partner. It sounds to me like she was just checking up on you. Or you were comforting yourself in the knowledge of her memories being so vivid in your mind. Either one works.

Be well and have the physical just in case. You are very dear to alot of people here. Me included my friend

I have not had an experience even remotely like the one you described, but I would echo the sentiment expressed above and go see your doctor for a complete physical and a stress test. We only use a fraction of our brain power, and I fully believe that this could be your brain's way of warning you that something is wrong but fixable!
