The Sound of Music is on TV right now and I am listening to "These are my favorite things" So nice. What a nice surprise~~

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

Brown paper packages tied up with strings

These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels

Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles

Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings

These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes

Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes

Silver white winters that melt into springs

These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don't feel so bad

A guy in my freshman dorm had the cast recording of Sound Of Music. He drove me nuts playing it over & over & over & over... & over. Forty years later I still can't hear that music w/o recalling how cute he was. Prettiest basket I've ever seen. :D Strangely enough he was straight and a basketball player. Go figure.

Before the film...

That resonates with me. I was dating girls in high school, and did a double date to see the pre-Broadway tryout of "The Sound of Music" at the Colonial Theater in Boston in November 1959. Since it was a new show, people did not know the songs yet (you willl be happy to know that, McGuy). I was much more interested in my male friend than the girl I was dating. I often wondered what happened to those people.

I do not remember much about "The Sound of Music," except Mary Martin singing the title song sitting in a tree looking at the Alps in the distance.

I ran across the the movie while changing channels and immediately thought that greatness is at home wrapped in a blanket and singing along. I came in just as the Nazis are threatening Captain Von Trapp and he tells them that the family has a big show that night and they must attend. We then get Edelweiss and for the first time this time it reminded me of the singing of Le Marseilles in Casablanca. The crowd singing along their voices rising in patriotic song as the Germans look on.

Seriously, how did you know that I was watching it at home wrapped in a blanket as you described it. There must be a hidden camera in my house. Alert! Alert! Purplekow Alert! :D :D It's cold I am wondering whether I should start my fire place. Too much work though.

It's the best movie ever! I am watching The Wizard of Oz now reading a book. A song for you~~

My personal favorite is West Side Story. If I am turning the channel and come across it, I will stop and watch to the end. Great music and dancing. It does drag here and there but I am always weepy eyed as the carry Tony off with Maria trailing the processional.

God but we are the quintessential gay group. Sitting in NY watching Cabaret here. OK nobody likes who LIZA turned into but what a great movie. Im just not sure whether I liked Alan Cummings or Joel Grey Better.

I think

Real Maria was cute too.

The real Maria von Trapp was no Julie Andrews it seems. Kind of a monster. Hooray for Hollywood!

no surprise, of course, but much liberty was taken as it evolved from real story to play to movie....

one example is that, when they "escaped" Austria, they simply went down to the station and got on a train...they did not have to hike over the mountains to Switzerland...(this is what I read somewhere)....

one of the kids in the family used to own a ranch near my place here in Arizona...I think it was just a "hobby" ranch, as they call some of the ranches here
