With all the talk about Tiger Woods’ indiscretions over the last couple weeks, several people have asked what I think would happen if one (or all) of the people he cheated on his wife with were men.

It’s a legit question. Our first openly gay active athlete very well may be a married man caught red-handed or outed by a lover. With all the pressure in sports to conform to the straight norm, there must be dozens of gay athletes cheating on their wives with guys. That story will come out at some point.

My guess is, Tiger would be given a lot more leeway by the media; Instead of a horndog, he’d be a gay man trapped in the life of a straight man. Some would probably distance themselves more, but my guess is he’d be embraced by many more.

What do you think? What would be the reaction if Tiger was on the Down Low instead of just having sex with more women?

I think that would be the definitive end of his career.

It would certainly be the end of his money making career, but his life has been so narrowly focused on golf (and sex?) that I suspect there is nothing else he can do but play winning golf whether or not he can make a whole lot of money at it.

Can you imagine, Tiger as the resident Pro at an exclusive all male country club in Palm Springs?

I thought we already had our first openly gay active athlete - Matthew Mitcham who won a gold medal in diving.

But, I still don't think the world is ready for Tiger to come out of the closet. I think he's cute as hell but I also feel there's probably NOT a gay bone in his body.

I agree with others that his career and endorsements would probably be over.

It's Happened Before: Bill Tilden . . .

There has been ample precedent for having an "outed" gay superstar. Indeed, the best examples occur in tennis: Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, and Bill Tilden.

King was married and came out after her playing career was over (I think). Because of her talent on the court and her gutsiness off it (she was the big force in equality for women's tennis), she remains an iconic figure---but I bet her post-career earning capacity went down because she was no longer married. (I think BJK was subject to a palimony lawsuit at some point.)

Martina was never married and more or less came out during her playing career; this has surely hurt her ability to earn big dollars in endorsements and broadcasting jobs. (Contrast Chris Evert, her exact contemporary, who was not as talented [though she did win a huge number of major titles, not nearly as many as Martina, who also had a big lead in head-to-heads] but has had a great post-playing career.)

Bill Tilden was surely the most tragic. Probably the greatest male tennis player the USA has ever had (Martina being the greatest female player), Bill T. played past his prime and was arrested a couple of times in California for homosexual solicitation (probably what they called "lewd vagrancy" in the day). He died relatively young, broke, and pretty much alone. The price of the closet was mighty high in those days.

I wouldn't say Navratilova's record was far better than Evert's - she held a 43-37 lead over Evert head to head, and pretty much every singles record Navratilova held, Evert was a close second. And let's be honest, Evert is more, um, aesthetically pleasing to most people than Martina. Her being lesbian definitely hurt her with endorsements, but even if she were straight, I'm not sure she would have done all that well in that regard.

As for Tiger being 100% straight I wouldn't be so sure. Wasn't one of his voicemails to one of his hoochie mamas about a dream where he walked in on her with Derek Jeter and David Boreanaz? If there weren't so damn many of these women I would think this little tidbit would be getting a LOT more attention...

Most of the professional athletes that come out are in a "singles" sport, such as tennis. Golf would also qualify. When the world and team mates accept gay players on "team" sports teams, we will have made significant progress. It is a sometimes discouragingly slow process but so long as it does proceed, I will be encouraged.

We just cannot expect "over night miracles" although they would be pleasant.

Irish Sports Hero Comes Out

Donal Og Cusack, an Irish national hero in the rough sport of hurling, has come out of the closet in a new autobiography.

All-Ireland hurling star Donal Og Cusack has revealed in an explosive autobiography that he has slept with both men and women before realising he is gay. The player has lifted the lid off his bisexual past in a candid story of his life that makes him the first ever senior GAA star to publicly declare his homosexuality. The Cork hurler from the small village of Cloyne is a legend in GAA circles after winning three All-Ireland finals. Yet in what may shock the sporting establishment, he admits to sleeping with both women and men before accepting his sexuality as a gay man in his autobiography Come What May published by Penguin Ireland and due out this month. In an honest and down-to-earth account of his life as one of the GAA's most high-profile players, he reveals how he tried to date women as a young man even though he knew from the age of 13 or 14 “that I was a bit different”. “I tried to go out with women to make sure, to see what kind of feeling it gave me,” he writes. “I went out with nice women and good women, but sure, I still knew. I wanted something else. I get more out of men. I just do. Always have. I know I am different but just in this way. Whatever you may feel about me or who I am, I've always been at peace with it,” he said.

There have been rumors about supposedly gay male tennis players, but I can not remember anyone actually coming out. Did I miss something?

I don't think there is an active, ranked male tennis player who is out. However, there is at least one "club pro" in ATL who is out (after he retired from pro competition). Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of tennis is that most of the "stars" are very gay friendly in that they would hire gay accountants, managers, etc. and "tolerate" gay players. Many of them seem to participate in gay charitible activities because they want to.

I cannot help but think when the sport of "hurling" is mentioned that it is an activity mainly of college fraternaties. Sorry.

Richard Gasquet is more than just a pretty face, and a great ass.

He was ranked as high as #7 in the world in 2007. This year he was suspended for testing positive for cocaine after kissing a woman, who was high, in a Miami club. Gasquet was cleared a few days ago.

Two years ago, Gasquet issued a statement saying, "I'm not gay" after the rumors about an affair with an older businessman persisted.

Ah, French men!
