Costco is waging war. War against a giant corporation which will not negotiate the price of its products. Costco prides itself on providing its large membership the best prices, yet the Coca-Cola Company will not co-cooperate!

So, Costco has canceled any deliveries of Coke products in its stores until they do. And I am behind them all the way.

Remember when a 12 pack of Coke could be had for about $2.50? (We are talking recent times here because the older of us can remember nickel Cokes.) Now, a 12 pack at WalMart or Safeway is $4.98!!! They've doubled the price. I did get a 12 pack at Target on sale for $4.00 though.

So, who knows what to do, especially if you are used to drinking Coke on a regular basis.(That's the trick they use- get us addicted to the stuff and then raise the price!)

This price increase is not a good idea for the holidays. All of those Santas holding their Coke bottles must be disappointed.

Coke from Mexico is also available in my area. It's made with sugar instead of corn syrup. The pricing on that is fascinating. They sell it by the individual bottle. At Jensen's, our upscale market, a bottle is $1.79. Yes, $1.79. At WalMart the same bottle is $1.59. Food4Less sells it for 99 cents. But I buy a case of 24, in short buying it before they open the case, and get it for about 80 cents a bottle. CRV extra.

Can we win the battle against this large corporation? With the buying power of Costco leading the way, I bet we see some price breaks soon.

But, that's only going to apply to the corn syrup stuff.

Okay, those of you who avoid soda altogether can chime in now about the health benefits of say, tap water!

I rarely drink Coke, but mostly because beer has been less expensive than soft drinks for 20+ years.

I rarely drink Coke, but mostly because they removed the psychotropic elements decades ago.

Sugar, Corn Syrup, Consumers

No word on the pricing, though. Did Costco win any concessions? We will have to wait to see. If they did, look for other merchants to go for them as well.

Meanwhile, a blogger reports seeing Mexican Coke at Costco, but it is not at my local branch. The price looks to be the same as Food4Less::

Costco is Selling Mexican Coke!

If you like the Real Thing better made with real sugar and you happen to live near a Costco, you'll be happy to know that they're selling Mexican Coke: $17.99 for a case of 24 twelve ounce bottles, which comes out to 75c each. How'd Costco manage that, you ask? According to SFist, they've "conformed to CA and U.S. rules, such as CRV (the sort-of deposit you pay for the bottle) and "nutrition" labeling, so everything appears to be nice and legal."

Coca-Cola Corporate in Atlanta says there is "no perceptible taste difference" between Mexican Coke made with real sugar and US Coke made with high-fructose corn syrup, but as anyone who's ever had the two can tell you, that's wishful thinking—drinks made with real sugar have a clean sweetness and light mouthfeel to them, while those made with corn syrup have heavy mouthfeel and a cloying sweetness.

Don't believe me? A commenter on Jason Perlow's post on Passover Coke (made in the US with real sugar for the holiday) said he'd brought back real sugar Coke from Nicaragua and did blind taste tests with friends and family: "We used purified ice, cold bottle cokes with Sugar & HFCS and a rinse of purified water between taste. EVERYONE - to a person - can taste a difference and all prefer the sugar! Nearly half of the people were very sceptical, and said it was in our heads. They said “I remember that taste”, and “WOW, that IS better!” [via YumSugar]

Wow. 2 liters makes almost 900 Calories. You were either a real exercise buff, someone who ate very little, or really gaining the pounds...

I was 6'4 195 the whole time. giving massages burned allot of it off. then id do 30 minutes on the eliptical each day. and i was a very light eater.. but after july i wasn't doing massage or working out and went from 195 to 210 in a few months so A few weeks ago I gave up the 2 liters aday to 2 12 oz cans aday.

iv lost 3 lbs just from the soda reduction. even at 210 it wasn't very noticeable on a 6'4 frame. for almost a year I was suffering from some really bad dizzy spells to the point of almost fainting. id have a spell or 2 amonth. I went to the doctor on December 1st and was told I'm diabetic. that ended the 2liters aday. I always had a very high metabolism. from junior high until my early 20s i was under weight. I know a guy thats 5'7 125lbs and drinks 2 liters of dr pepper aday

Untreated diabetics can lose lots of sugar through their urine. After a while they will even lose, rather than gain weight--but at a cost of thrashing their kidneys, pancreases, and other organs.

Coke is still $4.98 a 12 pack at the local grocery, unless you buy five of them, then it is $2.00 a 12 pack. So but two for $10, or buy five for $10. Okay class, which is the better deal?

That is simply absurd! At the Coca-Cola museum in Las Vegas they have a tasting room in which you can taste the differences from Coke all over the world! Besides the water and other additives, Coca-Cola will taste different based upon the region it is made.

You guys are right the prices of soda are ridiculous as well as the CRV fee which is not going to where it's supposed to. Sad Sad Sad.....

Its all a rotten deal, I can'[t believe people drink that crap, any brand. But if you really want to drink carbonated water saturated with sugar and spiked with phosphoric acid why in the hell not buy a local brand? If you don't take advantage of the limited choices we now have then soon there will be NO choices, other than Coke or Pepsi, McDonalds or Burger King, Microsoft or Apple. Of course most people spend so much time in front of their televisions they don't know anything else exists.

Sheesh, and for crying out loud who cares how cheap it SEEMS to be at a giant big box store, shopping at those places is about THE WORST thing you can do to your community. That is what little is left of it.

I can't believe people let their kids drink soda pop more than for a special occasion.

900 calories of poison combined with light eating was probably worse than combining it with heavy eating, at least if your eating a decent amount of protein and lots of anti-oxidant rich fruits and vegetables. Otherwise your body just isn't going to be able to handle all those glycemic calories in a sustainable manner.

Whats the eliptical? A trail or road to get places? Cause I figure thats one of the best ways to get exercise, incorporated into real activities for daily living.

Raul, whatever happened to showing respect for others? Several of us here have made our preferences known, and then you call it crap. Then you attack us for where we shop.

I allow you your preferences without calling them names or otherwise demeaning them. Is it a one way street?

My father worked for 7Up Bottling Company for 40+ years. 7Up paid for all my undergraduate and postgraduate schooling. The funny thing is that I have never liked carbonated drinks, not even as a kid. I simply do not like the fizzy ness. For the same reason I have never much cared for champagne. I have always preferred fruit juices. Only recently have I come to realize that an eight ounce glass of fruit juice contains more calories that an eight ounce glass of coke or 7Up – go figure.

People are too focused on the calories, the fruit juice typically has many more important nutrients and vitamins that the 7up. Frankly I think most people should ignore calorie counting and instead focus on what kinds of calories they are eating.

Of course the best thing would be to drink water and eat the fruit. That way you also get important fiber. Which seems also to control the rate of sugar metabolism.

Fascinating that Advanced Glycation Endproducts may contribute significantly to diabetes and that AGEs are found in many foods INCLUDING many dark colored soft drinks. The evidence indicates strongly that pop (as it is called here in Chicago) is extremely unhealthy. Even the carbonation seems to cause unhealthy changes in the way the body handles the ingredients.
