Way off-topic, but I think many posters here live in or near Chelsea. Trader Joe's is supposed to be moving into the old Barnes & Noble space. Woohoo!

Good news for people living in the area. Most people know that Trader Joe's has good quality and unusual items. The downside is the long lines to check out

As happy as I am to see Trader Joe's thriving, dang, wish it could have come at the cost of anything BUT a book store!

TJ's dark chocolate covered dried blueberries are always in my freezer as a quick bit of WOO! And if you know a woman "of a certain age" I'm told their chocolate covered edamame are hot flash antidotes.

You heard it here first.

is this the first TJ's in NYC?....we Westerners have been lucky to have them around since the beginning (Pasadena in the 1960s)

it's a great store...well-run and just a feeling that everything is good and has been thought thru...employees are happy (a very important thing) and prices are entirely fair.....

owned by a German company, I think??

There's at least one other in Union Square, not terribly far from where this new one is to be. I've never been as the lines are meant to be obscene. Hopefully this new one won't be as bad and may even take some of the stress off the other.

And yet another to come...

According to news reports, there will also be a Trader Joe's in the new building going up at the corner of West 72nd Street where Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway meet. Once there are three Trader Joe's in Manhattan, the lines should get shorter.

Now they're around the corner

yea!! love trader joes...

In the past I traveled 45-55 Minutes to the nearest TJs - once a month for about two years.

Now there is one near my office in CC Philly - GOTTA GO TO JOES!

I walked into the Union Square Trader Joe's last month, just to see the lines I'd heard about. I was amazed to see it was as small as those in Indianapolis. I imagine that Manhattan could support 5 or 6 stores. Meanwhile, I'm told that first thing in the morning on weekdays the current store is not crowded. But how many people can go grocery shopping on weekday mornings.

Well, most escorts, I imagine!

Sorry to hear the Barnes and Noble closed on 6th. Well, just sort of. The one time I was in it I found it had the least friendly ambiance of any Barnes and Noble store I'd been in. When I saw it I figured it would hasten the demise of the Oscar Wilde Bookstore. (Not too far away, if I have my geography correct; but that part of the city does get confusing when I've been away for a while.I

Trader Joe's has been in Cobble Hill Brooklyn for a little under a Year now!

It is in a former Bank Building! What any of the Hoopla is about is beyond me! Other than the Great Dr. Bronners Soap Price! :D

In NYC "FAIRWAY" Markets Blow Joe away in ALL Respects! Not to mention the Cafe Area in the Brooklyn Store...where you get a Beautiful view of the Harbor and the Statue of Liberty! ;)

gee, I guess the Manhattan TJ'ses might be different than the ones out here on the frontier....usually no more than two people in front of me in any check-out line at any time....and if the new one is going in in a former B and N bookstore, maybe they're much bigger than the average one out here....average size out here is maybe approx. 3500 sq. ft.??

Amen to that BJ. I've driven over from Manhattan on a Friday just for a Lobster roll in that cafe. Interestingly, this newer TJ on Broadway will be less than two blocks from the main Fairways which has a full restaurant upstairs with a unique view of Broadway in that area including the goings on at the Beacon Theater. I once had a steak there that rivaled Peter Lugers in every way but price. And there's already a new Whole Foods at 100th and Columbus. I love it: the upper west side, the new Williamsburg.

I just got handed a flier announcing that it'll open this Monday, the 12th. The website suggests it may not have a wine shop like the one in Union Square does (sorry, three buck Chuck).
