My cat is bored. He sleeps all day... What kinds of activities can you do with your cat to keep them active?. I usually let him out but it's getting cold here so he is now really bored. Poor kitty..

My neighbor trained her cat to fetch these little balls especially made for that purpose. It's so cute. At random times the cat makes this adorable little whimpering sound until she picks up the ball, then he goes crazy as she tosses it around the apartment and he brings it back to her. He's better than any dog I've ever seen.

Check out the Cat Sitter DVDs on Amazon. The DVDs keep capture our cat's attention so well that he goes behind the TV to try to find the gerbils. The DVDs are not physical exercise, but they will entertain your cat and keep him company while you are out of the house.

Kevin and Jerry thank you so much. I play and sleep with him but he sleeps too much.

A second cat, especially at the holidays when pets that need a home may not get one, will keep your cat company and play with him. You need to slowly introduce them to one another, but most cats will accept another one into the home if they are properly integrated into the home. Failing that, there area lots of great cat toys out there. One that I get a friend kept his cat busy for hours. It was a circular tunnel with a track running though it. In the top of the tunnel were a series of holes large enough for a cat to get a paw into but not so big to allow its head in. on the track was a stuffed mouse filled with catnip. Each time the cat reaches in, the mouse moves on ball bearing wheels around the track and to the next opening.

My cats just love toys filled with catnip. They can play with them for hours. They like to play with them and after they have "killed" them they bring them to me. Target sells a line called Smarty Cat that can be refilled. Another idea is something that I saw for the first time this evening at petco. It is a laser toy. It is like the laser pointer, but you can set it on a table and it automatically shines the laser on the floor. Even though my cats have figured out that I control the laser, they still like to play with it.

Loco-Laser Cat Toy...

What kinds of activities can you do with your cat to keep them active?.

Hi "Greatness":

I have two black Bombay "rescue" cats (brother and sister) who are crazy over playing with their laser pointer toy. You can find one at Target or Walgreen's, etc. for about $4.00. The toy can be a very stimulating and interactive game you can enjoy with your cat and can make even the laziest or oldest cats get up and play- chasing that dot across the floor, around furniture, or up a wall. My female cat especially loves chasing the laser and never seems to tire of it. You can also order one online at:

You guys are full of ideas. I will try them. A second cat is too much for me to handle right now but I think it is a good idea.

It depends. How old is the cat is the first question I would ask.

Once the cats know each other and are getting along, 2 cats are actually easier than one. They play and pal around together and are generally much more content, especially if you are out of the house for long periods of time.

As PK already suggested, the getting to know you phase can be difficult, however. One idea that has worked for me and others is to keep them in different rooms (say on opposite sides of a closed door) and let each of them explore the room the other has been in under your supervision. Much more to say on this subject, but I'm sure googling will get you complete information.

As others say, two isn't any more work. Mine play together, entertain each other, sleep together, groom each other, and just generally pal around all day long.

I got the 2nd cat because right after getting the 1st I started traveling a lot for work. (It was an unplanned change.) Neighbors reported that the kitten sat at the door and cried the whole time I was away, so he clearly needed company.

Cats are better off in pairs, I think. They keep each other occupied.

True in spades. I saw one bizarre situation where a co-worker had owned 2 cats since they were born. Cats were not related, but both came into the household at the same time, very young. Played together, best of pals, never apart.

Well, the family decided to adopt a 3rd cat, which they had found as a stray.

Within a month of the 3rd cat being introduced to the household, it and one of the original 2 had bonded, and begun terrorizing the other of the original 2. It got so bad that finally the abused & rejected cat ran away.

Reminds that Dorothy Parker defined "cat" as a snake wearing furs.

P.S. I have owned a cat, and loved it. But La Parker had a point.

Get a laser light! My cat is obsessed with hers. A few minutes shining the light on the floor and watching her chase it is great exercise for cats. Dogs love them, too. You can get them in pet stores and cost about $10. Make sure your cat has a good supply of other toys to swat around and play with.

If your cat is truly bored, you chould consider getting another cat for company and companionship.

I have a laser point but he is not interested in it anymore. I'll try to get those automated ones. Maybe I should get a second cat. Thanks.

Keep your blinds or drapes open and create a spot so the cat can sit and look out. My friends have 2 cats and they love to look out the windows. They live on the 10th floor but the cats still can see alot and love to watch the birds fly by. When the blinds are closed they even try to get in between to look out. Keeps them entertained for hours.

Then, to really entertain your cat, put on a dog costume and sit outside under the window whimpering and looking sad. This is especially effective on cold and rainy days.

Two cats are no more work than one. Case in point...mine! I had two cats that were siblings. One of them died and for 2 years I only had one. He seemed lonely, so I adopted another cat from the veterinarian. The only additional work is the extra ten seconds it takes to fill the second bowl of dry food and the extra fifteen seconds to scoop out the extra litter box product. Get another cat. And the automated laser thingy and some catnip toys.

I got my cat a friend. He loves him. He has a friend now to play with, run around the house with and sleep together. He didn't like sleeping on my bed because I almost crushed him with my leg one time. So thanks for your advice. :)
