I think it is the other way around. DH is the AL owner's choice. Some say it isn't "real" baseball when there is a DH, whoever "some" happen to be.

 

It could be that there are those among that "some" that say real players don't use helmets or even gloves, but that would put MLB two centuries behind where they are now.

 

However, it is interesting to note that the MVP is the DH for the NYY, a player who only routinely appeared in 3 games. His contribution was crucial. Others were certainly on the short list.
