How do full time escorts/erotic masseurs pay for health insurance? I imagine that it can't be easy. I've always wondered since being an escort, you're not really part of a group health insurance plan, thats assuming that escort agencies don't provide some type of group health insurance plans. Perhaps there are escorts out there who have domestic partnerships and can get insurance through their partner's job? I did meet one healthy erotic masseur in hi early 20s who had a real hard time getting health insurance because of some operation that he had as a kid. He was able to get health insurance eventually, though.

So escorts and erotic masseurs, how do you pay for health insurance?

I purchase an individual plan.

People ask this question a lot. I'm confused as to what the issue is. There seems to be an expectation of some hurdle I've never encountered-- is it just the $500 a month? Health insurers don't ask about one's profession and there are many self-employed folk who manage health insurance. What am I missing?

Fortunately, for me as a Canadian, this is not an issue.

Thats the thing I admire about Canada...its all taken care of. Only thing is, if I were to move there I'd have to wait for citizenship which takes a while?

I don't believe that this is correct. Maybe Zip can give us more info but if someone is hiv positive some provinces do not cover the prop meds while others do. So in reality not everything is taken care of. But compared to what they have up north to what we have down here I'll what they have. Now as for myself I have a nice lil day job that gives me benies and good ones too. I have dental, vision and health coverage at about $11 a week with a $500 spending acct that I can use for xrays, lab work and other stuff. The only thing the $500 doesn't cover is Rx but that is not a big deal since I do not take any prescriptions. Oh and the $500 rolls over every year if it is not used or whatever is left over rolls over to the next year.

Greg: I don't believe you have to become a Canadian citizen to enroll in our health care programs. You do have to be in the country for 3 years before you are eligible to apply for citizenship and I understand it takes about a year for the application to be processed.

On another note - you mention that you do not take any prescriptions. If I recall correctly, I believe you are HIV+. I am surprised that you are not on the "cocktail" circuit of whatever drugs are the drugs de jour for that condition. I hope this enquiry is not too personal.

No I am not on the cocktail because I am fine without it & I do not feel comfortable putting all those toxins into my body. For me this is a personal choice & something that I feel is right cor me. Others will disagree but my body belongs to me & nobody else. I've recently met some posers on here & they can attest that I am healthy & show no signs of being I'll.

Hugs,

Greg

I am a self-employed consultant and have been using Freelancers Insurance Company as a provider of health insurance. My monthly fee is $245.00 for their 'PPO-3'. Granted, the co-pay for any doctor's visit is $50, which may be high, but at least I am covered in the event of an accident or a major illness. I have used them several years and would encourage you to take a look. Their programs are designed for self-employed people exclusively.

I am not an employee of, nor in any way affiliated with Freelancers Insurance Company.

Not on HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy)? Eventually your immune system will fail if you have HIV and you will have to take the expensive cocktails. You're right though that some people's immune systems hold up for a few years or so. You may be one of those lucky ones. There is one drug Atripla that is a combo pill maybe you could try if you're not wanting to take a ton of pills. But don't wait to long either if your counts are falling

because once you get opportunistic infections, you'll be in trouble.

I haven't had insurance since 2004. Every time I try to get it they give me a quote of only $100 or so each month, but then jack it up to $800 with a $5,000 deductible (and then they pay only 75%)... that's absurd: I'd have to put out nearly $15,000 before they cover 75%??? I think I'll stick to driving with my seat belt on, exercising, and taking vitamins (and keeping my fingers crossed while knocking on wood).

I have a great plan and it's with a national provider. It's an individual policy and I pay $130 a month for health and dental. It's an 80/20 plan. I've only had one rate increase on my past renewal period and it rose from approx. $100 to $130. It sounds like others have much more of a challenge finding insurance which is really too bad. It's like playing Russian Roulette. :(

I had a meeting today with my agent to discuss insurance for 4 full time employees of my business. The others have insurance through a spouse or a part time. In order to get a middle of the road plan with reasonable coverage and a pharmaceutical plan, it was going to cost $725 dollars per person per month or nearly $36000 in a year to cover 4 people. Last year I had 5 people and it cost $32000. 16% increase in cost, 20% fewer people covered. Escorts have it tough and so do small businesses. Public option we don't need it, not until insurance companies have drained every ounce of gold they can get from the gold egg laying goose.

Spendy Item~

Ya... Health Insurance... given this is my day job, my night job... (porn offers no benefits), I pay that heft $450/month and don't have optical or dental... (that all comes out of my pocket~).

You would think the Adult Industry workers would start a Union to cover some of that...

As it is now... all but one studio I work for just hands you a check... later on in the year you get this 1099. So, you have to save up to pay the taxes on that money earned. It;s about 1/3rd your paychecks.

That's why I like to work for this one studio in SF, (a bondager studio). They take the taxes out right away and send me a W2 at the end of the year. Ahhhhhhh~

Isn't one of the questions whether you will pay more in other taxes that will equal or be greater than the cost of employee insurance with some of the "reform" plans being offered? No doubt the insurance companies need some "guidance". However, how many of your employees know that you pay 1/2 of their ss and medicare with holdings? What ever else they are making, they are also "making" the $725 per month for insurance + about 8% more for ss & medicare. At $5,000 per month, that is about $1125 additional or $6,125. I know you know this, do they?

FYI, I am paying about $950 per employee for insurance.

Best regards,

KMEM

You must have one helluva plan to be paying $925 because at $725 the have only an across the board $20 copay with out of network benefits and a drug plan as well as full hospital. I am getting rid of the out of network benefits and increasing to a $40 specialist co=pay and am saving about $150 dollars a month per person. Gets me right back to what I was spending last year per person.

It just costs more

There are just a few differences

1) there are no group discounts

2) No employer to cover a percentage as part of your benefit package

3) The insurance company is not required to accept you without regard to preexisting conditions. Therefore some companies require medical screening and only offer conditional coverage with a "preexisting condition exclusion"

4)Your age may also affect your rate when purchasing individual coverage, Where as group packages usually have set rates for Individual / Family coverage.

Individual coverage rate is usually between 400.00 and 600.00 dollars a month for a decent plan
