I responeded to a craiglist ad which offered a massage. I received the following automated reply asking me to join an "agency site" for $1.00 to get the phone #. I haven't seen this before on cl but was wondering if others had and do you feel it's legit or something I should avoid. Btw, his pics are really hot but there's no telling if that's the guy.

There was a thread similar to this a few weeks ago (?)that discussed the same subject only in a different city. It is a scam. the models and pics may change, in fact the guy advertising in Los Angeles is using two different guy's pics, but the same automated answer.

If you send an email to the response address you will get an answer trying to explain that it's all legit and that he is waiting just on the other side of that phone call/ registration. Run as fast as you can in the other direction.

Unfort there are many guys who are going to fall for this trick. It shouldn't cost you anything as a client to see our pics and contact info. I wonder what happens to those who might not know better and give out their cc number? Ok that was a silly question. I think we all know what'll happen when the cc number is passed on. Remember that ol' sayin: "If it's too good to be true, it probably is."

I read the very small print. The way the scam works is that when you pay the $1 you also give continuing authorisation for an amount to be deducted monthly from your credit-card.

If I recall correctly, the monthly sum was about $35 but Good Luck trying to get the authorisation cancelled.

Another Craigslist scam

On craigslist, in the adult section of NYC/Midtown, avoid this ad.

Title: "Young European Swimmer".

The guy goes by the name Nikita but uses a Bel Ami picture of porn star Tim Hamilton. He claims, the "picture is real". lol. Real? It's copied from the the Bel Ami website. Picture was taken back in 2000, nine years ago.

Of course, there are those who argue that you should avoid Tim Hamilton too! A thread on another escort review site said lots of unhappy things about an encounter with him. SO may be the guy using this pic is also making a double-bad business decision?

I went to a doctor once. After a short conversation, he said that he couldn't do anything for me, but charged me $150 for the consult. Isn't that like going to Best Buy, finding that they don't have what you want, but still paying to enter the store?

Oh- this about escorts? Never mind!

I ended up changing my credit card number a bunch of years ago...too embarrassed to call my Credit Card company to get it cancelled, and couldn't figure out how to do it myself.

Well, presumably he used his expertise to evaluate your condition and at least educate you with respect to the condition. Would you rather he give you a placebo or sham treatment (which is quite commonly done, BTW)? Unless they're getting paid contingency fees with a very high payout expected, few lawyers will guarantee you a favorable trial outcome. I've also had car mechanics tell me that I will have to pay them big $$ just to find out what the problem is and how much it will cost. You pay for time and expertise (and for the office staff/overhead). There are no guarantees in medicine.

Well, Unicorn, if you went in to see a lawyer and he told you that you didn't have a case, there would be no fee. Best Buy air conditions the store and pays for the staff on hand, but they don't charge me if they don't have what I want.

Same with my shrink. "A hopeless case," she says, "so let's up it to twice a week." http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x22/Smileys_4_you/Smiley%20ordner/crazy.gif

GREETINGS TO YOU,

THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME YOUR TIME. PLEASE BE PATIENT AND READ MY EMAIL TO YOU. I AM A STAFF OF ZENITH BANK (LAGOS BRANCH, NIGERIA) ATTACHED IN PRIVATE BANKING SERVICES.

I AM CONTACTING YOU CONCERNING A CUSTOMER AND AN INVESTMENT PLACED UNDER OUR BANKS MANAGEMENT ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. IN 2004, THE SUBJECT MATTER; REF: JB/ZNT/BANK/107 CAME TO OUR BANK TO ENGAGE IN PRIVATE BANKING SERVICES, I WAS THE OFFICER ASSIGNED TO HIS CASE.

WE MET ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS PRIOR TO ANY INVESTMENTS BEING PLACED. I ENCOURAGED HIM TO CONSIDER VARIOUS GROWTH FUNDS WITH PRIME RATINGS.BASED ON MY ADVICE, WE SPUN THE MONEY AROUND VARIOUS OPPORTUNITIES AND MADE ATTRACTIVE MARGINS FOR OUR FIRST MONTHS OF OPERATION, THE ACCRUED PROFIT AND INTEREST STOOD AT THIS POINT AT OVER 10 MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS, THIS MARGIN WAS NOT THEULL POTENTIAL OF THE FUND BUT HE DESIRED LOW RISK GUARANTEED RETURNS ON INVESTMENTS.

IN LINE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS HE HAD EARLIER GIVEN TO LIQUIDATE THE FUNDS AFTER 4 YEARS IN ORDER FOR HIM TO MAKE SOME INVESTMENT REQUIRING CASH PAYMENTS IN EUROPE AND AMERICA, I FOLLOWED HIS INSTRUCTIONS AND I LATER MADE NUMEROUS ATTEMPT TO CONTACT HIM AFTER 3 YEARS IN ORDER TO GET FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS FROM HIM. I MADE FUTILE EFFORTS TO LOCATE HIM AND I IMMEDIATELY PASSED THE TASK OF LOCATING HIM TO THE INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS DEPARTMENT OF OUR BANK.

A PERSON WHO SUITED HIS DESCRIPTION WAS DECLARED DEAD OF A HEART ATTACK IN CANNES, SOUTH OF FRANCE. WE WERE SOON ENOUGH ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE BODY AND CAUSE OF DEATH WAS CONFIRMED. THE BANK IMMEDIATELY LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION INTO POSSIBLE SURVIVING NEXT OF KIN TO ALERT ABOUT THE SITUATION AND ALSO TO COME FORWARD TO CLAIM HIS ESTATE.

THERE IS US$14,000,000.00 DEPOSITED, I ALONE HAVE THE DEPOSIT DETAILS AND THIS WILL BE RELEASE TO NO ONE UNLESS I INSTRUCT MY BANK TO DO SO. I DECIDED TO TRACE HIS RELATIVES OVER THE INTERNET TO LOCATE ANY MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY BUT OF NO AVAIL, HENCE I CONTACTED YOU. I THEREFORE, SEEK YOUR CONSENT TO PRESENT YOU AS THE NEXT OF KIN TO THE DECEASED.

THIS IS TO ENABLE US SALVAGE THE PROCEEDS OF HIS ACCOUNT AND GET IT PAID TO YOU INSTEAD. I HAVE THIS OBSESSION THAT IF THE DIRECTORS OF THE COMPANY CONFISCATED THE MONEY AND ENRICH THEIR POCKETS, IT MIGHT NOT BE PUT INTO PROPER AND USEFUL VENTURES TO BENEFIT THE POOR MASSES OF THIS WORLD.I IS PREPARED TO PLACE YOU IN A POSITION TO INSTRUCT MY BANK TO RELEASE THE DEPOSIT TO YOU AS THE CLOSEST SURVIVING RELATION. UPON RECEIPT OF THE DEPOSIT, IF YOU GIVE ME POSITIVE SIGNALS, I WILL INITIATE THIS PROCESS TOWARDS A CONCLUSION.

PLEASE I AWAIT YOUR QUICK RESPONSE TO THIS E-MAIL :( [email protected] )

SINCERELY,

MR.ANTHONY OFFOR.

I get this kind of "opportunity" too. Sometimes nothing for weeks then a whole bunch at a rate of about one per day. I find this timing odd.

What really puzzles me is this. Are the senders really successful in getting replies? I would think that even a double digit IQ could see through a scam of this type.

I know there's a sucker born everyday but I always thought that was alluding to COCKsuckers.

We actually get stuff like that sent to our inboxes via our ads also. But its usually about a filthy rich, horny ambassador from England or Nigeria taking 12 escorts at once along a vacation in some far away country...and for us ALL to get paid for 7 days stay. Ridiculous. They must be aimed at very new internet users....Its also funny that it always comes through email instead of regular mail. Lest that ever happens!

Hmmm. Doesn't quite strike me as analogous. I think the more appropriate analogy would be walking up to the window of a gynecologist's office and asking "Does the doctor do prostate biopsies?", and leaving when the receptionist says "no." Or going to Jiffy Lube, and asking if they do transmission work, then leaving when they say no.

But if you made an appointment with the gynecologist, used his time, then asked him to do a prostate biopsy, you would have to pay even if all he had to say was "I'm sorry, but that's not within my training." Also, if you went to AAMCO to have your clutch adjusted, and then, after working on the car, they said "I'm sorry, but you need $2000 worth of transmission work," you would have to pay them for their labor even if you decided not to go through with the $2000 job because the car wasn't worth it.

Whether it's traditional or not for lawyers to not charge for the first consultation I can't say. I can understand why it would be good marketing for them not to charge for the first visit, but I'm sure that's entirely up to the individual lawyer.

Unicorn, I think the word "marketing" is the right one here. The doc marketed specific services, I went to see about it, he said he couldn't do that service on me, so I left. Why pay him?

I guess I would need to know more about the specifics. For example, if you went for infertility, and he evaluated you and determined that you simply do not make adequate sperm or had some other untreatable infertility condition, then that's just part of medicine--you cannot guarantee results (unless he specifically guaranteed results in his advertising). But if he represented himself, for example, as a hair transplant specialist, then, after meeting him, he said that he didn't really do that, well that would seem to be misleading advertising.

My apologies for steering the thread away from the subject matter. I liked the post about Tim Hamilton, and I thought it was interesting to see the pix of the old Tim versus the new Tim. The New Tim is hot, but there is something more natural about the Old Tim that I like better. Does anybody think Tim has had assistance with his new look?
