It stunned my eardrums! 100 cats screeching would have been subtler. Just my opinion...

Was the objection to the choice of repetoire, the volume level, or something else?

Being a tad catty here? ;-) No reason he shouldn't have a career as a counter-tenor...

A surprise

Another surprise where the talent is not readily reflected by the packaging. Good for him. There are not a lot of successful counter tenors with his range. Not sure how the opera crowd would embrace his look though.

Well, if not exactly looking like Marylin Manson, definitely today most young opera singers, even successful, have a much modern and contemporary look than, let's say, Maria Callas or Pavarotti!

Nevertheless the kind of shock from audience and panel comes from the fact that they are not used to this type of voice and range, which is becoming more and more common in the world of opera with many young "countertenors" or "male sopranos".

Even in opera this was a VERY rare breed until a couple of decades ago.

To put together a rock star look and that voice was a good thought in terms of looking a bit "freak" (will I be attacked again for this word?..) and having a positive reaction. It has become a must in these competitions.

This kid talented? Yes, a little bit.

I am friend/acquaintant of gay opera singers (tenors, baritones) who for their own fun sing like that imitating soprano range, but much much better.

Once again (am I so cynical??) I find this a good publicity, but nothing absolutely special in this kid
