craigslist issues

Oh you'll probably get some bad comments regarding your note; but I certainly agree he's a hottie. Now here's the issue, I've been getting crap from so called pure guys on craigslist for posting on "casual encounters" that I'm a generous person. Comments have arranged from "so you'll be attracting all the hustlers" to " so you want to be killed." first, look at who is posting on casual encounters, everyone who wants an unprotected BJ to someone who says, come and fill my hole one at a time. And I'm suppose to feel guilty because I mention that I'm generous. Yeah, I'm looking for someone to spend time with and if it costs OK. It's casual encounters. You're advertising for free sex at any time I'm saying, hey if you'd like to earn some money I'm around. That doesn't defend what has happend with those women and this creep but come on guys.

I am so happy that they caught him. For me being from CT. ever since he has been on his rampage my business has slowed. He really spooked alot of people around the Mass RI and CT areas. I don't post on CL for various reasons and freeks like this animal is the biggest. I have alot of friends both male and female that are in the business and I would never want to see anything happen to them. We all stay away from CL and alot of our clients respect us more for not posting on their. All I can say if you post or hire from CL PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

Your friend,

Anthony

Regardless if one posts or hires on CL or M4R we all need to be on guard. It goes both ways we don't who is hiring us & the client doesn't really know us. Both side becareful & always leave a paper trail just incase.

Had escorting been legal and set up in "red light districts" I think violent crimes like this or similar would fall off. If law enforcement and our elected officials really cared they'd legalize prostitution and tax it just like any other kind of service. By doing so they'd make the profession safer and add to the revenues of the state and city. Course doing anything of the sorts would make total sense and be off the table.

I agree with you and the same point could be made about legalizing marijuana.

48 hours mystery did a story on this last night. They interviewed the girl that got away. She was tied up and he took 800.00. They think there's more cases than what's known about. Most escorts or erotic masseurs won't call 911 if they are beat up or robbed.

SF Chronicle article

Responding to an ad on Craigslist for a used car in East Palo Alto got one man shot and robbed. A woman selling a laptop on the classifieds site was held up at gunpoint in Vallejo when she met with a prospective buyer.

Although millions of transactions spawned by Craigslist are completed without a problem, a small number end in violent crime.

That potential was underscored this week by the arrest of a Boston University medical student, who is charged with killing a woman he met through Craigslist and robbing another. Philip Markoff is accused of murdering Julissa Brisman, with whom he had allegedly arranged a massage in a hotel room, and of pulling a gun on a second masseuse in a separate attack.

The high-profile slaying raises the questions: How safe is Craigslist? And should the company do more to prevent violent crime?

"We believe the violent crime rate is vanishingly small," said Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's chief executive. "But no crime is acceptable."

Craigslist, based in San Francisco, has evolved into a major destination for everything from selling futons to apartment hunting to finding a date. Not just a bulletin board, it is known as a community, where people share tips about pets and rant about their neighbors.

More than 42 million people used the site in March, according to comScore.

But some have tried to take advantage of the service by posing as legitimate users to find victims. Many users think nothing of inviting strangers they meet through the site to their homes to sell a sofa.

The frequency of violent crime on Craigslist is unknown because law enforcement doesn't track it. Several Bay Area police departments have had to investigate at least a few incidents in recent years.

Nationally, there have been at least four homicides related to Craigslist, three of which took place in the past six months. The Boston case, in which the suspect has been sensationally dubbed the "Craigslist killer," is just the latest.

Last month, a former New York radio newsman was stabbed to death, allegedly by a teen answering an ad for rough sex. In October, a Minnesota woman responding to a help-wanted ad for a babysitter was shot to death by a man who was recently sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

Recent Bay Area crimes include the robbery of a man who was lured to an East Palo Alto parking lot in February to buy a car advertised on Craigslist. Three men brandishing guns beat the victim, then grazed his head with a bullet during a scuffle, after taking $1,300 in cash.

In Vallejo, a woman trying to sell a laptop computer was held up in December after meeting with a man who had expressed interest in buying it. He took the laptop and her wallet.

Patrick Black, who operates CraigsCrimeList, a blog that tracks crime on Craigslist, said that lax policies on the Web sites are to blame for the violence. On some days, he posts links to several articles about various illegal activity, under what he calls the "Craigslist crime blotter."

"Ultimately the responsibility is with the criminal, but Craigslist makes it so easy to facilitate these crimes," Black said.

Black's advice is for Craigslist to eliminate "the perceived notion of anonymity" by introducing a ratings system that would highlight more reputable users. He also said the company should place prominent messages on the site warning users that their IP addresses are being tracked and that any crimes can be traced back to their computers.

Buckmaster said that his company routinely cooperates with law enforcement and, in any case, says that the service is an unwise choice for criminals because users can be digitally tracked back to their computers.

Crime on Craigslist isn't limited to violence. Financial scams and fencing of stolen merchandise are common.

In November, Craigslist reached a settlement with 40 states' attorneys general to require strippers and escort services to pay a fee with a credit card to post ads, in an effort to curtail prostitution. The Cook County Sheriff's Department in Chicago subsequently filed a federal lawsuit in Illinois accusing Craigslist of failing to do enough to stop such ads.

Buckmaster said that an existing system on Craigslist for users to flag questionable posts eliminates some of the most obvious problems on the site. But the content of most ads - even those involving crimes - is innocuous, and identifying those that are precursors to violent crime "is like looking for a needle in a haystack," he said.

Educating users to take precautions, such as always meeting in a public place, is the best strategy, he said.

"If they will follow that rule, they'll largely avoid the small risk that does exist," Buckmaster said.

I appreciate Glutes' observations.

I'm sure that those, who have responded to traditional newspaper classified ads, have been shot and robbed. Joggers have been raped and killed. Folks, who have answered a knock at the front door, have been killed. Kids playing soccer have been killed by lightening.

My not original observation is that life's activities are full of danger/risks at varying levels. My strong hunch is that using Craigslist has very low relative risk. Use common sense.

regardless of where you post all clients should be screened. All appointment's should be finalized by phone from unblocked numbers. If you do a outcall leave the persons address on your desk or fridge until you return. if you are the client going over to the providers place then leave their address near by until you return. I get at least one email a week from someone wanting to book a massage thinking ill just email them out my address without finalizing things over the phone.

Mr.Lucky, hope this helps. From sfexaminer:

Craigslist killer also targeted men?

April 27, 4:51 PM ·

This story keeps getting creepier as they dig deeper into Philip Markoff's double life. The latest is that he responded to an ad for 'males for transsexuals.' Markoff went by the user name sexaddict5385 and sent very revealing photos of himself to this person. Those same photos matched those on Markoff's hard drive.

His family came to visit him, but he told them, 'There's more coming out ... Forget about me and move to California.' I can only imagine what's about to hit next. All I can think about is how his fiancé must be dealing with these facts about someone she thought she knew and was about to marry. Apparently, she is still in denial by making a statement that Markoff wouldn't hurt a fly. Hopefully, she has a support system in place to help her through this horrific ordeal.

Here is a video from the Today Show of the advertiser that posted the ad seeking male transsexuals. The man said he advertised in a Craigslist category called “casual encounters.” Markoff, he said, was looking to meet with “men who dress as women, with transsexuals — anyone who he can get a hold of online.

I hope the others are not afraid to come forward with their story. What are your thoughts?

Dr phil did a story on this today. I to do hope others come forward. A FBI profiler said that in her opinion if he hadn't been caught he would have done it again in a week. IMO this girl died because she put up a fight. I think there's others and they most likely never came forward.

glutes, I read all 3 pages of that and missed any hint that he was bisexual.

He may not be bisexual now - but give him a month or two in the big house and he will be trisexual and lovin it.

I think it's totally inappropriate to be making "comments" about what will happen to his guy in prison.--even if the guy is cute. I don't mind us discussing the events--obviously a lot of us on the MC are a lot more likely to have had iffy encounters from Craigs List than the population at large. The situation hits too close to home for a lot of us.

But the entire situation is a tragedy. A young guy with his life ahead of him either because of a need for money or some serious psychopathology has committed murder, robbery, and assault. There is a victim dead. His family and fiancee's life are now shattered irrevocably.

I think there is just too much tragedy to make flippant comments about what will happen to the guy once he's convicted.

Joseph,

I apologize if it appeared I was talking about you. Yours was the last post--and so when I hit reply--my post landed under yours.

Well I guess we'll have to give you the medal for being the most bleeding heart, politically correct poster, without any sense of black humor, on this message board.

How boring!

Are we supposed to feel sympathy for him?

RIP Markoff?

BOSTON (Aug. 17) -- A former medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist apparently killed himself inside a Boston jail, where he was awaiting trial, authorities said Sunday.

Philip Markoff's body was found Sunday morning in the Nashua Street Jail after an apparent suicide, said Ed Geary, a spokesman for the Suffolk County sheriff's office. Geary said no additional information was immediately available, and an investigation had begun.

Saturday would have been Markoff's first wedding anniversary, but his nuptials were canceled after his arrest

So, how did he kill himself? Was he just hangin' around his cell? Hold his breath? Beat himself to death with a toothbrush? Or...is the MA Corrections Dept. playing CYA?
