Iowa Supreme court ruling on gay marriage set for release friday 4/3/09. Iowa has no residency requirements!!!

The court ruled unanimously in favor of gay marriage. Will this mean new jokes about the traveling salesman and the farmer's son?

It's things like this that make me proud to be an American. The fact that it pisses off Republicans makes it twice as nice.

The summary of the Iowa Court's opinion has a reasonably clear outline of the constitutional issues in gay equal protection cases (not just marriage). The prose plods along but is about as accesible to a layman as you are likely to find. Legal news coverage is never about the issues. Like election news, it's all handicapping the outcome & who's for and who's against.

 

The key is the finding that anti-gay legislation must be subjected to "enhanced scrutiny." Read "historically suspect class" as legal jargon for "you gonna need a damn good reason to shit on these folks."

There was this traveling salesman who snow-banks his car in Iowa last Feb. After hikeing 2 hours, he comes to a house and bangs on the door. A farmer answers and asks what he wants. The salesman explains that he's stranded and asks if he can spend the night.

Very good news

 

That is good news. As good of news is that the state attorney general has announced that he will not pursue a motion for reconsideration (tho because the decision was unanimous, I can't imagine it would have helped much.) Moreover, I doubt that Iowans will pass anything that amends their constitution to stop gays from marrying. It is a possibility but I think it is a very remote one.
