I'm sure this topic has been discussed endlessly here but I never paid any attention since I was enjoying a very active sex life with no impediments. But now I'm older and so there. I know most of you will advise I consult my physician and I will do that at my next appointment. However, I wonder if any of you have any suggestions as to what works for you. I am not excited about getting a prescription such as Viagra. I would prefer something over the counter. I have done a cursory search on-line and seem to get a lot of ads for herbal supplements, etc. Do any of these work or are they just money down the drain? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to get off bad!

It's fine if you prefer something over the counter, but this could be a sign of something serious and you REALLY ought to be proactive about seeing the doctor, not simply waiting till you next happen to see him while you try things out on your own, some of which could be contraindicated for an as-yet-undiagnosed condition. Don't let your pride get in the way.

I would agree with sniper. Even if you don't think there is a likelihood of being ill it is a great idea to share with your doctor that you want to try erectile disfunction treatments. Some of them, even the herbal ones may alter your blood pressure and other functions, so it is better if you are monitored. Also, if you speak with him/her, you could try different pills and see what works better for you. A doctor friend of mine says that erectile disfunction drugs are pretty much like anti-depressants... each brand works entirely different in different people and to find the one that works great for you is a trial and error process.

I know that we tend to see our doctors as figures of authority and it's hard to imagine talking about your intimate body functions with them but that's precisely what they are there for.

The most common cure and recommendation for erectile disfunction, however is Vitamin R. (Relax) The more you focus on it the worse it will be. Laugh a little, relax, enjoy, and remember that even if you are not the hardest you can have a great time.

(I know, I know, being hard is great, so ask your doc.)

I am sorry I told you exactly what you didn't want to hear, just trying contribute.

I am sure in no time you are going to be having a riot again.

Enjoy, stud!

Always hard and warm,

Juan

See Your Doctor

Medications for erectile dysfunction should be prescribed by the doctor for many good reasons. Most importantly mentioned above was how your body reacts. If you take other medications your doctor will advise you which erectile dysfunction medications can be taken or not taken in conjunction with your current medications. In addition you are advised not to use alcohol or poppers when taking these "miracle pills." Again, as mentioned above, medications react differently with each person. As they say: "It is better to be safe than sorry."

Have no shame

I never look upon it that way. To me, my body is a machine just like a car is. When the machine is in need of tinkering or fixing, I take it to a mechanic. That's how I see my doctor - a mechanic (without the grit in his fingernails)

Cialis, Levitra, Viagra

Cialis, Levitra, Viagra...there are lots of options. They are not all the same, and you'll probably want to experiment with how they feel. I'm a big believer that what works well for one body is not necessarily going to work well in/on another body--even these drugs. But what Best Hotel cautions is really important: they are all of them dangerous if mixed with poppers. Don't go there.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that a good hard-on, I've been told, is dependent on good hydration. Drink lots of water.

You haven't said whether you are taking any other medications; sometimes they may be the cause of your dysfunction. Since you mention that you are now of a certain age, you might, for instance, be using Flomax, which can cause erectile problems.

Besides seconding all the helpful comments above, I should add that over-the-counter wood-helpers do not offer anything like the pronounced effects that people report from prescription ED meds. The Stiffnights capsule I mentioned does not do a whole lot, and a couple of others I've tried brought on nothing at all except a mild headache.

Also, the least bit of alcohol reduces the effect to practically zilch.

Also, they are a witches' brew of God knows what, so you may want to read the label beforehand. Or maybe not. Stiffnights for example lists the following active ingredients: Yi Ye Cao, Huang Jing, Rou Gui, Tongkat Ali, Turnera Aphrodisiaca, Cayenne 40M H.U., Sheng Jiang, Bo He, White Willow Bark, Huang Qi, Wu Wei Zi, Hui Jiao Zi, L-Arginine Monohydrate, Arginine Alphaketoglutararte, Arginine Ketoiscoaproate, Cordyceps sinensis, Ganoderma lucidum, Lentiunula Edodes, Auricularia auricula, Spirulina, Chlorella, Spinach, Barely Grass, Wheat Grass, Dulse Leaf, Kelp, Alfalfa, Beet Root, Orange Peel, Dandelion Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ginkgo Leaf.

Finally, I note there is now at least one brand packaged as a breath strip:

...have not tried it, and for some reason am a bit intimidated to do so. Possibly the temptation to take too much.

on Flomax

Several years ago my urologist, whom I was seeing because a classmate of mine wanted to use my sperm to have a child, put me on Flomax. I don't really remember why I was on Flomax or what it had to do with our desire to reproduce (which didn't happen...long story), but I do remember that it made cuming more "difficult"--it took longer. I've since cum to appreciate that that can be a blessing in some circumstances...it prolongs the fun! It's been a while since I was on Flomax, but I don't think it interfered with my ability to get and stay hard. It did interfere with cuming.

Good point! I tried the standard dose of Viagra (50mg) and ended up with a headache and some dizziness. And it wasn't effective at all.

Then I tried the standard dose of Levitra (10mg). I had no side effects, and it was beneficial.

Flomax is usually prescribed for people with BPH (enlarged prostate). BPH causes varying degrees of urological problems, which interfere with the normal urinary flow. Hence, the name Flomax.

Actually I belive the standard dose of Viagra is 100 mg-my doctor gave me the 50's once because he said if it worked than I woudn't need the 100's. A few times it's been interesting in that I achieved an erection--but my nose became so congested that I hadto breathe out of my mouth. Usually that's how I know the Viagra is working is when my nose become congested or my face turns red.

Oh, and difficulty with erections can have many causes as people have said--can be a sign of hardening of the arteries, blood pressure meds, decreased testosterone--so that is why it's good to talk to either your internist/family practitioner/or urologist.

Strangely, the price of the 50mg Viagra is the same as that of the 1000mg. So buy the 100, and if you can get by with 50, cut them it two.

The Viagra web site states that 50mg is usually the starting dose. If that doesn't work, then go to the 100mg dose.

On another subject mentioned in this thread, there was a time when you paid more for higher doses of meds. Now it seems that you pay more for the number of pills of the same drug. This has been true for every medication I've compared prices between doses.

Ergo, if a pill can be cut in half, you save money by getting a higher dose and cutting that pill in half with a good pill cutter. You can do this with most tablets, except for enteric drugs or atypically shaped drugs.
