Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Montreal is great fun, but it is also rather cold for the next several months. If you want a break this winter, sun and warmth, but also boys and fun, Fort Lauderdale is a great site. Air fares from almost anyplace east of the Mississippi are very good now, and the Fort Lauderdale Airport is a very convenient one. Sunny and warm every day of the year.

There are now 6 stripper bars in or very near Fort Lauderdale, as well as 18 miles of gorgeous beach, including two gay beaches (19th Street and St. Sebastian) and a nude beach at Haulover State Park. Bars are: Boardwalk at 1721 N. Andrews (25+ dancers every night, mostly twinks and natural but some gym bunnies), Johnny's 1116 W. Broward (all twinks and a hustler bar adjoining), Torpedo's 2829 W. Broward (very nice set-up, VIP rooms, natural physiques), Dude's 3312 E. 33rd Street (gym bunnies and piano bar attached), Cupid's Cabaret - North Miami Beach (close by to south, total nudity, VIP rooms), and Cupid's Cabaret - West Palm Beach (close in north, total nudity, VIP rooms). Several bars also have go-go dancers on weekends. Big dance venues at Copacabana 2800 S. Federal Highway and Coliseum 2520 S. Miami Road (close to Copa in Ft L), plus Cathode Ray and Boom and others. Wilton Manors is the center of the "gay village" with restaurants, bars, and shops. There are many gay bars and restaurants, all of whom advertise in Hotspots, the glossiest gay bi-weekly in the world.

There are hundreds of very good ethnic restaurants, most in moderate range: especially along Las Olas Boulevard and Federal Highway north between 1000 and 6500. There are 30+ gay guest houses with very nice accommodations, privacy, lush tropical landscaping, usually clothing optional pool areas, and an opportunity to meet some very interesting guys. No kids and no women. (See Hotspots Magazine for ads for all.)

There is also culture if you are interested. The FGO Florida Grand Opera performs in Miami and Fort Lauderdale and is very good. This season they are doing Butterfly, Magic Flute, Paul Bunyan, Masked Ball, and Lucia. (Log onto http://www.browardcenter.org for a complete list of activities at the great Broward Center for the Arts in Fort Lauderdale on the river.) A few miles to the north, Palm Beach Opera does five other operas; go to google and palmbeachopera. Visiting orchestras are frequently in town: Prague, Boston, Pittsburgh, etc. Two superb dance companies frequently perform both classical and contemporary: Miami Ballet and Maximum Dance (schedules on web at browardcenter.org). Lots of touring musicals: so far this year we have had Mamma Mia, Oklahoma, Lord of the Dance, The King and I, and Rent. Hairspray is coming in January, and more later. (Check at browardcenter.org)

Many, many escorts of all kinds are available at reasonable rates. Try men4rentnow.com, rentboy.com, and Hotspots Magazine on-line for individual ads. Best luck with twinks at one of the agencies and a bit pricey: UniversalStuds 954-565-9747, MiamiBoyz.com, Elite 954-630-3591, and Secrets 305-669-8955. (These numbers are all public with ads in Hotspots.)

RE: Sun and Boys and Fun

Hey Karl,

Thank you for a most informative and useful post.

I can't wait to get over. I usually stay in Miami Beach.

Is there a thread somewhere about places to stay in Fort

Lauderdale? If not, it would probably be helpful to some

of us to read about them - from guest houses to mainline

chains....

Thanks again

Fort Lauderdale Accommodations

There are many, many places to stay. Here are two lists of guest houses:

http://www.gayfortlauderdaleresorts.com

http://www.hotspotsmagazine.com/LINKS/LINK.HTM

I would recommend one of the gay guest houses within a couple of blocks of the ocean. They provide free parking, which is not always easy, and they are within easy walking distance of the beach and ocean. Easiest way to tell, if you have not yet been here, is to call up the address on Mapquest and look at it. There is a cluster of good gay guest houses around the Windamar - Worthington, St. Sebastian, Flamingo, Elysium, Cheston (all recommended). It is just a few minutes' drive down to Las Olas or over to Fed Hwy for restaurants. Stripper bars are 10-15 minutes. They are also only 15-20 minutes from airport. As soon as you get into town, get a copy of Hotspots, which has all the information for gays. Every gay establishment - guest house, bar, restaurant, store - has stacks of new ones every two weeks.

If you prefer the big chains for hotels, they are all here and mostly close to the beach, but not necessarily close to other things. Perhaps best is Doubletree Suites along Intracoastal at Sunrise. There is also a big Howard Johnson and Holiday Inn at that intersection. Further north are Ramada and others; further south are Hilton, Sheraton, another Doubletree, Radisson, etc. I would not take an address further than 4000 North - you will be away from things. Also, if it is of use, a bus runs all along the beach from far north to south, #11, and fare is only $1.00. So it is nice to walk along the beach or sidewalk from the Windamar area down to Las Olas, eye candy all the way and St. Sebastian gay beach right in the center. Then have lunch at Lulu's Bait Shop or one of the other places along the beach near St. Olas, a drink or two, and catch a bus back to your guest house when you get tired. Other buses run part of the way and then turn west, so be careful.

"Paul Bunyan"

Bilbo,

According to the FGO's website, "Paul Bunyan" was written in 1941 by Benjamin Britten with text by W. H. Auden.

PAUL BUNYAN

by Benjamin Britten

Sung in English with projected English translations.

(THIS IS NOT YOUR NORMAL OPERA.)

"Part light-operetta, part musical comedy" this tall-tale of an opera tells the mythical story of Paul Bunyan "in a whimsical, almost Broadway-musical style". Campy, folksy, with a libretto by the famous poet W.H. Auden (one of Auden’s poems was featured in the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral).

In 1941, Benjamin Britten and W.H. Auden collaborated on Paul Bunyan to create a delightful operatic treatment of one of America’s legendary folk heroes. New York City Opera’s production in 1998 was broadcast on Live From Lincoln Center, with Stewart Robertson conducting. This visually stunning production was widely acclaimed by the New York press: "Giant Fun ..." "Bouncy and bright ..." "cheerful ... funny ... very entertaining." "The direction of Mark Lamos was constantly, brilliantly inventive."

Paul Bunyan is a musically wonderful work and a refreshing change of pace, while Auden’s text is filled with cleverness. Don’t miss it!
