Male Brothels?

I've been to Thailand twice had have sampled nearly all of the host bars in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai. Only once did I stumble into one that seemed to specialize in under-age kids. (There were rumors of a couple of others in Pattaya -- but both were considered sleazy and dangerous).

It is true, however, that Thai men often appear much younger than their actual ages to western eyes. In several cases, I actually asked to see their identity cards to verify that they were legal. I often misjudged by 3 to 5 years.

In short, I think the press has vastly overstated the prevalence of child prostitution in Thailand. When found, such brothels/bars are quickly shut down -- and that's what makes the news.

In the past few years Thailand has done quite a good job of cracking down on underage prostitution. The legal age for barboys used to be 18, as of this summer it is 20. Prior to this summer's crackdown, I think it would be fair to say that some bars used to skirt the law by hiring some 16 and 17 year olds, but these days it is fairly risky for most bar owners. Apart from economic necessity, the barboys are not "forced" into the business - some go into the work for the money (on a good night a barboy can earn the equivalent of a month's salary for a clerk or service person), some to find a boyfriend, some because they are gay and have not really found a gay community to which they can relate. Of course there are some pedophiles who come to Thailand and there are those who provide boys for them, but in my observation they are outside the mainstream of the Thai gay bar scene. When I first came to Thailand a few years ago, I was appalled to see pre-teens prowling the streets of Chiang Mai looking for customers. I no longer see them.

If you are looking for Thai guys-for-hire over the age of 25, you are going to have a hard time finding them in many of the gogo bars, especially in Pattaya. Most customers prefer the younger looking guys and that's who they hire. But remember that most of the waiters, doormen, bartenders and managers are also available, albeit for a slightly higher off-fee (to compensate for their lost services). Often they are former gogo boys who have passed the "sell-by" age for that market. Frequently you can also find a better assortment of age mixes at the male massage places and host bars.

Losgatan is correct that younger Thai men can frequently look years younger than their actual age. I have a boyfriend in Thailand (neither a current or former barboy, by the way) who is 28 and usually looks about 5 years younger. I shave with a Norelco, he shaves with tweezers. He does work at looking younger though - no matter what their income level, gay Thai guys spend a lot of time applying unguents and gels and making sure that their hair and clothing are just perfect. The cosmetics/haircare sections at Boots and Watsons are HUGE.

I should specify that when I said "most of the waiters, doormen, bartenders and managers are also available," I meant at the gay gogo and gay host bars, not in general. There are gays who work at hotels and restaurants, of course, and some of them are in the mood for fun with farang (white foreigners), but I certainly didn't mean to imply that all or most waiters and bartenders in Thailand are available for hire. Some tourists come to Thailand with the attitude that the country is one giant brothel - this is far from the case. Outside of a gogo bar, observe the appropriate rules for courteous cruising.

I think the other guys have summed up the situation pretty well.

Yes, there are dark shadows in Thailand that are inhabited by pedophiles, but they are totally outside of the mainstream gay scene. In fact, you are unlikely to stumble across such things unless you are specifically out looking for them.

And yes, I can confirm that Thai guys do often look a lot younger than their age. My thirty-something Thai boyfriend always gets carded when we are traveling together in the US, and people can never believe he is over 22 or 23.

As for older rentboys, I think the oldest I have ever found was around 32 or so. Tawan (a go-go bar specializing in pumped-up muscle numbers) would be a good place to look. Also, massage places like Hero and Albury often have a couple more mature types on offer. Check out the gym manager at Hero (the best massage place in town) -- his name is Charan and he has been a stalwart on the massage circuit for at least ten years, which would place him well over 30. He's a hunk and a real sweetheart, and gives a great erotic massage (and more) for the equivalent of peanuts (around $30 start to finish, including massage fee and tip).

But even if more mature types selling sex are a relative rarity, you can often find them offering a good time for free at saunas, parks, and porn theaters. Sex between men is all over the place in Thailand, and all ages participate.

That's a fascinating response, really. And so scathing.

But you're not going to try to hide from the other participants what you wrote at first, are you? I believe that you first responded to my post by spewing out a bunch of playground name-calling "insults." Then hooboy posted that he disapproved of what you wrote, and you kneeled and apologized to hooboy and said how much you regretted what you did.

You then apparently privately contacted him and begged him to delete your post so that nobody would see how pathetic you are. He then deleted it, and you then replaced your shamed, deleted post with this one.

You wouldn't want to hide that, would you?

RE: Woman in the room?

Traveller, I was going to let her slide on this one, since she only provided techical information.

She is a sneaky gal, though. f she wants to read my stuff about creamy boy cum and ass licking, she is going to have to tell us all her own bedroom delights. Well, on second thought, not if she is a lesbian. We just want to hear about guys!;-)

Age can be an elusive thing to determine. I went to Stella's with a handsome 50 year old friend, and he GOT CARDED!!!!!! I didn't.:(

As for Thailand, I was walking down the beach one night past a group of little boys playing. I smiled at one, and immediately his friends surrounded me saying "You want him? You take him to your bungalow for sex?" He was about 8 years old. I freaked and got the hell out of there!

Lucky, Katherine is doing a paper on prostitution so her response was knowledgeable and just corrected incorrection information another poster had put on the board. She seems like a nice enough lady ... and doesn't poke her two cents worth in the more salacious threads. Don't think she is a lesbian but she knows how to act like a gentleman. :-)

You're half right, so that's a big step forward.

Hooboy objected, and I responded that if I could edit it I would. It's his board. I'm not trying to piss him off. (You, of course, are another matter.) Two minutes later the posts were gone.

So, to get back to the subject, WOULD you like to see your female relatives in burqas with gags? That seemed to be what you were saying, but I don't want to misinterpret.

I go away for the weekend and what happens. First, bin Ladin escapes and then you pussies let K post 4 times without interruption. Dammit men, this place is going to hell in a hand basket. And Lucky, after you spent all Saturday afternoon with T2 and me collecting stones. You can't play both sides of the fence with something this serious. Weren't you the one who convinced T2 to tie just one hand behind her back because it would be more sporting if she could bat a few of the stones away from her face. Get witht the program, dude.

Later.

I have an older German friend that works for the Foreign Affairs of the German government (like our State Dept.). His job is visit Germans charged with various crimes abroad to make sure they receive fair treatment as allowed for in the host country. Most of his cases are drug possession charges, but there are some underage sex type charges.

His remarks echoed Icon's that aren't tons of westerners getting busted in Thailand these days for sex/age issues. Years ago this was more prevalent, also in the Philippines. He said an alarming trend is for pedophiles to go to Cambodia and Laos, where there is more poverty and the government is less organized.

nice of you to only say that I have only posted 4 times and kindly leave out the fact that I mistakenly posted five times! Ha this is 6! Stop the madness.....Seriously, I just wanted to say that you guys are great and to comment on the post about there being a male brothel in the works years ago.

Here is what I do know by doing research on the topic of male prostitution. In Nevada, there was thought given to having a brothel that had male prostitutes. The controversy was quite the talk of Reno about 13 to 15 years ago. In Nevada, there was only one ranch considering this. It was owned back then by Joe Conforti (Mustang Ranch) However, it never materialized. Here are the some of the reasons that it did not fly.

1) Lyon County would not approve it

2)Conforti had concerns about the financial aspects of a good return (conforti later skipped the country when indicted for Tax Charges)

3)The women of the original Mustang Ranch did not want to loose business

Just in case anybody wanted to know! Hey guys have a great holiday;)

I wish you guys would stop teasing Katherine about her tits making her typing the wrong color or something. This last posting shows her value to our discussions, and I just bet that there are some other knowledgeable distaff members of our boards lurking about when they should be talking occaisionally. After all, she is not taking the obvious way out - getting a new name to post under. Is she?

Okay, Craig…I’m on to you. You couldn’t possibly be as vapid and humorless as you are making yourself out to be. All this time I’ve been thinking that Traveller has been pushing your buttons…when in reality…you’ve been playing him. Right? You’re really a very intelligent and funny guy who has just been playing the fool for us. Right? (I bet you even know how to spell “racist” and you’ve just been doing that to annoy us.) You naughty boy.
