n2colour, thanks! Before I went to Brasil in October of 2002, my first trip, I received much advice to my queries from the men at this site and forum. From that time on I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to South America, thus I only deem it fair to impart to others what I have used and the sources which have helped me enjoy my trips.

 

This October/November, if all goes as planned, I hope to tour in Chile and Peru and in Argentina. After the tour I'll be on my own then joined by a friend who will do other parts of Argentina with me. From Buenos Aires we plan to fly to Rio for various components of the culture which we have yet to partake. We hope to find ourselves in the new club for men to r n r as well as at Meio Mundo, Club 117, and perhaps at Point 202.

 

From what is in the 2007 edition of Damon's..., I think we men at this site will have to inform the editor with much more valid information about Rio and Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires. There's more information at this site than there is in the book!!

As an alterntive to Roberto (if he is unavailable), and if you're in need of a personable and amiable guide, I'd suggest that you might want to contact Chorch to accompany you.

In October/November of 2007-- my friend and I hired Marcelo who I mentioned in this thread. He was indeed a thorough guide, for he met my expectations above and beyond and some. His fee is reasonable, and if you specific what you'd like from him (professionally)-- he'll make sure that you receive it. His expertise enhanced my two week stay in "The Paris of the South!"

 

Marcelo was quite willing to contact guys for me who advertise on http://www.soytuyo.com. I was very elated that he did this as I had some of the hunkiest men who advertise there. (For this service I quietly tipped Marcelo well; I think he did not expect me to do so!)

 

One of the guys who I hired failed to stay an hour; I had wanted to see him a second time, so Marcelo mentioned this to him. Lo and behold at our second session-- he did stay the time, and guess who was more than pleased?

Not everyone is so keen on Marcelo in Buenos Aires. I believe there is a unhappy thread about him on this MC Board. I hired him about a year ago. He is a nice dude, however a bit gossipy about his clients. He has visited here in the US where I live, and so we talked quite a bit (he has helped a family in Oregon buy BA Real Estate). He confided in me that he really disrespects his clients who ask him to contact escorts for them (translates & sets up dates). Apparently he does this when asked, but secretly hates this request...seems odd for a Gay tour guide, and slightly unprofessional to share this.

 

I have also read some other criticisms about his services on other travel (non gay) Message Boards. He knows many nice places to go out for dinner, Loves to go to shows, concerts, opera etc and he will go with you happily, but people should be aware that you are paying his way. I had no problem doing so, however this is something that (apparently) catches some folks by surprise. He also is a social escort, and nothing else...so do not expect him to play for pay.

(he also complained to me about those clients who do not seem to understand this).

 

If you understand that you will be paying for his way and you do not expect him to escort (other than social) I think that he is worthwhile for a first timer to Buenos Aires for your first day or so. Buenos Aires is a pretty easy and safe place to visit, and so most people can get along nicely without a guide after a day or so. Be mindful of your wallets and cameras, like any large city, pick pickets and petty thieves are not unheard of.

 

Anyway, I will cede this thread... back to Barcelona Guides.

I endorse all your observations on Marcelo, which I find nuanced and in my experience correct.

 

I'm the guy who advised him to alter his job-description from "escort' originally. I met him during my first visit to Buenos Aires but did not hire him. I hired Roberto instead and found him an excellent, discerning guide.

 

I met Marcelo for a drink on subsequent visits, but only on my 5th visit did I hire him for his usual fee. On that trip, I was accompanied by my much younger boyfriend who speaks no Spanish. Marcelo and my bf are similar ages and so I felt he'd be good company when we went to dinner and then clubbing.

 

I reminded Marcelo that I know the city well, and so I asked him to show us bars and restaurants that were good, patronised by locals and "off the beaten track". He promised to do so, and I was therefore surprised that he chose a place for dinner that is in every tourist guide and half-full with Americans (no offence meant).

 

We had a decent dinner and being knowledgeable, I chose the wine. When I received the check, I scanned it quickly to ensure it was correct. Marcelo remonstrated with me that it was impolite to examine checks in Argentina, and tried to take it out of my hands, saying "No, that's rude; here we just pay"

 

(Bear in mind that I've travelled internationally for business and pleasure all my working life and now that I'm early-retired, I travel extensively for long periods of time. I eat dinner in restaurants approximately 5x week throughout the year)

 

On scanning, I saw that I had been overcharged for the wine. We'd consumed 2 bottles of a very good wine but the price on the check was US$140 more than on the wine-list. I pointed this out directly to the waiter (as I speak Spanish); he was surprised and did NOT apologise. The check was altered with seeming ill-grace, I paid and we left.

 

I could not escape the thought, then and now, that perhaps Marcelo had a "kick-back" deal with the restaurant and hoped to benefit from the over-charge.

I posted my dissatisfaction with Marcelo in an earlier thread. I felt that the tour he had planned for me did not respond at all to what I had told him I wanted. He refused to reconsider, so I canceled with him. I very much like what Axiom likes, but this is one instance where I disagree with him. I would not recommend Marcelo.

Men, it is quite all right to cite a variety of assessments regarding guides and escorts. That is what makes for a "great" world of ours. I still standby my very positive recommendation of Marcelo because my experiences with him and his services were just that!

 

He fully met all of my requests and needs. Marcelo even took me to restaurants that were not tourist oriented. At one point I asked him about a restaurant that was purported to cook and serve the "best tapas" in Buenos Aires. He gave me the name, and I walked from Recoleta to this venue which was downtown. Sure enough it was the place and was full of locals and Espanol. I managed to order in spite of my not knowing the language. I truly enjoyed the food and the overall ambience.

My friend Barr and I took Gustavo's "Gaucho Tour." We liked it but not what happened upon our return to Buenos Aires; we were not delivered to our respective apartment complexes. I emailed Gustavo when I returned to the States. In the email I voiced my dissatisfaction about this one feature. He apologized and stated that I should have requested this. Well, to this date, all is well, and I think Barr and I will redo this tour and expect what Gustavo has promised us.

 

Don't do his "Gay Tango Tour." His fee doesn't warrant your using his services for this. You very well can do this by yourself. Great experience but not for the cost (taxi + entrance + Gustavo's fee per se).

 

At Gustavo's website is a wonderful "guest book," and you guys know that I have written in it. I included my city of residence: Monterey, CA.

 

Well, we have Gustavo, Marcelo, and I'd presume (Although nothing has been written about him within the past year +) Roberto to engage as a guide. I've used the services of all three men.

I'd agree with Axiom that he is a great "professional" guide. He just happens to be gay and I prefer to be around and support a guide that knows our lifestyle. Marcelo just got back from Orlando and he had a great time and we remain great friends. If he misled you, that, of course wasn't right..

 

But, I wouldn't recommend him for touring the sexual side of BA and I felt embarrassed even asking him about it. He's an attractive gay male that obviously has worked hard to earn the knowledge of his wonderful city. He's got a boyfriend that obviously makes him very happy and I wish the best for him.

 

I can say though that he gives a wonderful tour for a first time traveler there that is not so much interested in the sexual aspects of the city.

 

I'll be back in May now that I've become acquainted with the city to explore it a little further.

Wholeheartedly I recommend Roberto. He is much older than I am, but is still a great person to hang out with...he has a young attitude.

 

Marcelo is a little too focused on himself to be good for more than a day. I agree with all the detractors, and apparently other people on other sites do too. I believe it is a Frommer's message board that also echo's some of the negative sentiment about Marcelo. He is nice, but probably needs to learn a little more about working with clients.

It is November 2009. Chorch is back in his homeland doing his regular (reputable) business daily. He's also enjoying visitors as well as guiding them to places that he knows quite well since he's a portenio (a native of Buenos Aires).
