Thanks for the addresses. I checked out the escort board, and it's entirely in Russian, which will frustrate most readers here, I suppose. Also, almost none of the escorts has posted a photo (looks like "ØOTO" in Cyrillic), which seems to be more common on http://www.gay.ru

Yes, that is the dating service for gay boys. When the people at FACELINK put up barriers to prevent others looking in, this site moved up fast it seems, and it appears quite legitimate. As in many other Russian message boards, many young boys and young men openly ask for passage to another place, another country.

 

Whether they are really gay or not is an open question as things are more "open" in the sexual preference category.

 

On the other side, quite a few Russians get angry with such advertizing for emigration - and often batter the poor soul who openly courts a young Russian boy for emigration status. The gay.ru English message board is often ruined by such (and religious right wingers etc...). So unless your financial wealth is over the top and you can afford a live-in companion (and they are looking for more than an apartment), be careful.

 

The really young ones you see (16-18 or 19) are occasionally pawns of some broker (sex marketeer) and so best to avoid them (and similarly to avoid such young escorts if you ever visit). Sadly most have no idea of safe sex, nor do they even care. It is definately a "buyer beware" situation if you date one.

Thanks for all the info. Right now it's idle musings on my part. I've been reading the South American board, but as it's getting closer to summer, my thoughts are turning to Russia for the white nights. (The couple times I experienced near-polar summers, I've loved it.) When you mention "brokers" do you mean there's a dangerous pimp layer in Russia? That would make the youth market doubly-icky. But would it apply to the older escorts too? Is the scene in Russia rougher than South America (in addition to being apparently higher-priced)?

I am not sure how it compares to Latin America having never been there. However, on the times I have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg I always went through an agency - FREEMANBEE being more dependable. Their stable is always pretty good and reasonable (although if I were more proficient in Russian I might be tempted to try some of the cheaper guys who free lance but then again, you have no real idea what you are getting as there are little... or no... references).

 

But also escorts in Russia are far more reasonable in price than anywhere else in Europe or North America, and they do a lot more with a lot less attitude.

My feeling is that St. Petersburg is very safe to travel alone in. In fact, I traveled alone throughout Russia, and although had a handful of wee language barrier incidents, I never once felt unsafe. And certainly, St. Petersburg is quite simple to navigate, even without any knowledge of russian. A good guidebook will do just fine.

Lonely Planet refers to three gay clubs in their book. After searching out two of them and finding nothing there, I'd have to say they need to update.

Take note!!! Do NOT bother with traveller's checks! Practically no one will take them in Russia.
