Although I am probably exaggerating, it seems like once or twice a week a post-er gets lashed out because he makes a comment or asks a question about a guy on Rentboy and he either a) fails to include a link to the ad or b) the link doesn't work. Mayhem ensues, the villagers drag the guy face-down through the mud (and maybe the cinders and broken glass if we're lucky), and the initial question remains unanswered.

Linking to Rentboy ads can be tricky, so here's how to do it:

1) When you open the guy's ad, right-click on the "More Pictures" button and choose one of the following options: "Open in New Window" or "Open in New Tab." ("Open in New Tab" works in Firefox and in Internet Explorer 7...I don't think older versions of IE have this feature and I can't speak for other browsers.)

2) When the ad opens, look at the top of the browser window and see where the URL appears (http:// etc)

3) Select the entire URL. Usually, you can do this by positioning your cursor in the center of the URL and then clicking (or double-clicking) the left button of your mouse. If this doesn't work, start at the beginning of the URL and highlight it.

4) With the URL still highlighted, right-click on your mouse and select "Copy"

5) Navigate back to your post and paste the URL into your message. The URL should look something like this:

http://www.rentboy.com/location/getrb.asp?rentboy=136938&Location=229&speciality=Rentboy&keywords=&modifiedDT=&referer=&page=71

6) As deej points out in his reply to the original post, delete everything to the right of "&Location=299" so that it looks like this:

http://www.rentboy.com/location/getrb.asp?rentboy=136938&Location=229

In the not-do-distant past Rentboy did not allow right-clicking on buttons, so grabbing the URL of an individual ad was almost impossible. It is important that you open the ad in a new window or tab. If you just click on the "More Pictures" button and open the ad in the current window then you will not see the ad's URL (you will see the main Rentboy URL) and won't be able to copy it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've updated the post. The original link worked for me the first time around, but after I read your reply I closed all of my browser windows, opened a new window, pasted the original URL in the address line and, voila, it didn't work. Although I closed the windows and tabs that were pointing to Rentboy, I don't think I closed all of my browser windows when I tested the link, which is probably why it worked correctly.

you would think rentboy would make it as easy as possible to link their ads, more traffic, more business for the escorts, and more ad revenue... that being said, the escorts have a direct link listed in their account info page and the link for me is rather simple http://www.rentboy.com/MattMojo which is rentboy.com/"username" - you could try the address out with any username on the site, it may or mat not work depending on how many ads the escort has etc...

Is there a way to "pin" or "sticky" this to the top of the topics list for a few months? Or maybe someone create a FAQ with this info and other simple cut/paste URL advice? Seems like it comes up often enough, and for sure postings with no links come up *very* often! :)

You aren't technologically challenged ... or even if you are, in this

case it isn't your being a luddite (love that word) that is preventing

you from following those instructions. Rentboy has protection against

copying graphics when you right-click, and as the button "More

Pictures" is indeed a graphic, you won't be able to right-click. But

you do have a few options.

A) You can try and quickly right-click before the page fully loads.

The code that provides the protection against the right-clicking seems

to load last, so if you "beat it to the punch" you will be able to

follow the instructions above.

B) This is easier: Navigate to the ad as you would to view it normally

(ie left-click on More Pictures). Now right-click on the background of

the page, NOT an image. Anywhere on that light gray. In Firefox you

can choose "This Frame" then "Show Only This Frame" from the pop-out

menu. Follow the rest of the instructions above. IE is a little more

complicated. Right click on the background and choose "Properties."

You will get a dialog box that has all the information for that page -

the URL will be listed there. It is "cut and pastable" even though it doesn't look like it. Though lately IE has been popping the

individual pages out of the frames format for me automatically so you

can view the URL at the top like on a normal page.

Anyway, hope this helps. It is crazy that RB doesn't list a linkable

URL on each guy's page - would help people link to their site and get

them more page views.

Been there. Done that.

We had a similar thread pinned for most of a year and it didn't change a thing. Men don't read instructions.

When you buy a new gadget, do you first read the instructions or do you plug it in and poke it until it does what you want? Or do you resort to reading instructions only after not getting it to do what you want?

That's actually typical, and it's one reason software generally doesn't come with manuals these days. Nobody reads them so software companies save a boatload of money by not printing them.

This site actually has a FAQ. Nobody reads that either. ;-)

There are TWO posts in this very thread about how to doctor a rentboy URL after you've grabbed it. And there's a post from someone who clearly didn't read those instructions in the same thread.

Men don't read instructions.

(I'm guessing here.)

They don't want direct links because then you bypass all the banner advertising on the way in. That reduces their income.

(I'm not guessing here.)

The situation could be addressed easily to make the site more usable while maintaining their frames and ads, but Rentboy has not done so. After all these years, one can only assume it's intentional.
