Gigilo...Unfortunately the Last Bar for the Hustle Trade that was usually a Definite or Close to a Hookup was "Stella's"..

That place is gone almost if not 2 year's now.

The "Townhouse" has been on E58th St for year's..BUT don't even expect the "Old Ambiance" of a NYC Hustle Bar! There's alot of OLD there, but the "Ambiance" sadly isn't..IMHO of course. LOL :p

Coincidentally there is a thread about Townhouse on MaleEscortReview:

http://www.maleescortreview.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1632

Oh and I think it is on 58th between 2nd and 3rd.

And I'm sure JT is right about it not having the same ambiance as the hustler bars of yore. But it seems to work well for some folk.

Thanks for directing us to an update of the Townhouse.

I need to try the Townhouse again.

Rounds was a terrific hustler bar that probably can not be duplicated

in the age of the Internet. Too bad. Rounds reminded me of some of the houses of male sex in Sydney in the 1990s, it was that good.

I went only once to Stella's years ago when I was living in Italy and visiting the Big Apple, I was a bit shy, I had not hired any escort before and when I stepped in and a few of those gorgeous hustlers came to me or smiled at me I felt a bit intimidated and left shortly after by myself....:-(

Same thing happened when I went to the Gaiety.

Then I actually moved to NY but already the two places had been shut down, now I would definitely be less shy but....too late! x(

Townhouse looks not exactly my cup of tea on the website, the dress code is annoying...

How does it work?

The thing about Stella's was IF you were a Latino New to NYC and "Workin It", you found out thru the "Latino Grapevine" where to Hang to make the most $$. So all the "New Face's" were alway's popping up there! Great for the Shopper's!

Yes Rounds was Fun. Of course it was my "Youthful" Gay Period, when I worked on Christopher St. I used to hang with friends who lived on the UES and we used to hang there for a drink or 2 once in awhile. We used to bet, to see who would snag what "Old Guy", Before heading Downtown for the Free Stuff! LOL

"Juliu's" which also was another "semi"-Working Guy Bar, I believe is still standing also in the Village. Yes we have alot of History in NYC!

Ah, Julius's! I remember being mistaken for a hustler my first time there, in 1962. I went there to cruise, but a very persistent unattractive (to me) older man (40s?) kept buying me drinks and trying to make conversation, which I kept trying to deflect. He finally said, in frustration, "You'll never make any money with that attitude!" He was right.

You call it annoying - I call it pretentious.

I can understand them not wanting slutwear, but they do sound a bit "too full of themselves"

I realize that, with what I am about to say, I am going to open myself up for some sharp criticism. Yes I am 66 and maybe that makes me old fashioned but I really don't see why dress standards are all that bad. It seems that where ever we go today people insist on dressing in California slob style. I went to see "Jersey Boy's" the other day and the guy sitting in front of me was wearing torn levi's and a tank top. Certainly he has the right to dress as he wishes but as far as I'm concerned he looked awful. Recently I attenden a wedding where the groom, the best man, the minister, and myself were the only men in coats and ties. Several of the other guests were again in levi's and tee shirts.

I am convinced that people who dress well most often behave well. When I used to supervise high school dances the regular weekly dances were a pain in the ass because of student behavior. On the other hand the Winter Formal and the Senior Prom were a piece of cake. Students wore school clothing to the former but dinner jackets and formals to the latter.

I gave myself a 60th birthday party at which I insisted the men wear coat and tie and the women cocktail dresses. Listenting to some of my invitees you would have thought I had asked them to attend naked. I was adamant and all dressed accordingly. The interesting thing is that after the party how many of the guests commented on the fact that it was a really nice change for once to get dressed up and attend a function.

Both teachers and students, here in California, now come to school looking like slobs. Yet one of the most repeated complaints of these same teachers is that classroom discipline is a disaster.

Several business firms are returning to dress codes for both women and men. They have come to realize that relaxed dress standards can and frequently do lead to relaxed work standards.

Sorry for the rampage -- this just happens to be a pet peeve of mine

Charlie. Yes Julius's was alway's quite a mix..BUT more of a Neighborhood Crowd definitely. Most of the Older Guys would definitely get Drunk and Order a Hamburger... way before they would ever get Laid! LOL

As far as the "Townhouse".."The Attitude" for whatever reason has always gone with the UES Neighborhood! At least til the UWS became very IN for the "New Money Crowd", waay back in the 80's! LOL :p

Rounds and Townhouse were (are) hustler bars, not venues for high school proms or birthday parties. But, I do understand your point. All I can say is that Rounds' casual dress code worked for me and many others

(pardon the pun). The Townhouse does seem like a funeral home in the south. The much wider selection of 'available' young guys at Rounds on any given night may have nothng to do with the different dress codes.

My guess that the dress code is a factor in the slim choices at the Townhouse.

alanm..

Personally I think the Internet was the "Nail in the Coffin" for Bars like "The Townhouse". It's been a Clicky Crowd for Year's and Their Dress Code works for that Crowd! It's like an "Old Mans Frat House"! or even better.."Old Men with Old Money".. which works just fine for a few "Young Men with NO Money"! LOL

Most of the Older crowd would just as soon "Order To Go" for Outcalls to their Residence's, over the NET in NYC.. rather than stand around in a Bar looking at what walks in the door next! IMHO of course! LOL

:p :P :p

I've been to the Townhouse a couple of times on different trips to the city. While it's true that they publish a dress code, I've gone there dressed in jeans and a shirt and had no problem with anyone. Of course my jeans were clean and not ripped or torn, and a decent button down shirt. I found the place to be friendly and yes the guys there are older, but aren't older guys the biggest chunk of the market for an escort?

I second the support for a dress code at the Town House. I've been with friends in jeans, etc and they've never encountered any problem. And, frankly, it's nice to go to a gay club where every fool who thinks he's hot is not taking off his shirt to show off what pass for pectorals.

As for "how it works" .. make eye contact with an attractive guy, head downstairs to confirm the deal ...

And if you see my adorable friend Claudio from Brazil, tell him his buddy from South Florida sends his regards ... and be prepared for the ride of your life!

JT:

I must be at least 15 years older than you, because I loved Rounds as a place to pick up working boys (and what a fine selection Rounds had, most especially on Friday and Saturday nights). I seldom went there just for a drink or two with friends.

Just the thought of going back to the Townhouse makes me sick. Now that you mention it, Townhouse does have the feel of a faux exclusive Ivy League Club. I am talking Harvard, Yale and Princeton, not Columbia, Penn, or Brown. Alan

The Thing I do remember about "Rounds"...There were so many Bars in NYC at that time on the UES in the E50's & E60's around 3rd Ave..

But not with a Restaurant and Piano, at least I think they had one?

The place was always full of very Clean Cut Looking-Preppy Type Guys, Usually with their Sweater's wrapped around their necks. We used to call them The "Bloomie's Grads" LOL :p :P :p

I was a frequent patron of Rounds during the early 1990s. The piano and restaurant were still there, but the sweater guys had disappeared by then. By 1991, the regulars who hustled every night were well supplemented by college students (needing money in July/August for school), unemployed actors and guys who needed money to make this month's rent.

I remember paying a ridiculously small amount of money (even by those days' standards) to spent the weekend with a very hot Hofsta frat junior.
