Only he knows what repetoire he has planned, but I like his work. Or what I've heard of it. (Thank God for NPR!) If I recall correctly, he's made some kick-ass recordings with some second-rate orchestras. That bodes well for Houston.

Im so obsessed with Janis Joplin right now. Im 27, and wasnt even born when the world lost her to a drug OD.....and technically she isnt a "band", so Ill say Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company.

If you like rock music AT ALL..youve got to love her. If you know her life at all, you know how cruel people were to her while growing up in Port Arthur Texas....and you know the demons she battled when she finally lost to them at the age of 27. Its only been a month or so since I "discovered" Janis, and every time I play her while I drive around the city, I feel a little meloncholy that I never had the chance to see her live....because Im sure that was an experience. Anyone out there ever get a chance to see her?

I'd agree with those bands from the first three decades you mentioned Trav, but I'd also list the Velvet Underground, Television, Buzzcocks, and The Jam, along with the Tom Robinson Band, Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, and Tom Waites from any decade. Buzzcock members would later become Bauhaus, Red Lorry/Yellow Lorry, Magazine, DeVoto, and Pete Shelley.

Also in need of mention if only because they have great names:

Alabama Thunder Pussy

Penis Flytrap

The Gaza Strippers

Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black

Aerobitch

Itchy Zit

Ivan Halen

Zen Guerrilla

Turbonegro

Puny Human

Clit Cops

Big Meat Hammer

Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13

Bisapiens

The Strap Ons

Napolean Blown Aparts

New Bomb Turks

Saigon Sluts

Jodie Fosters' Army

Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments

and of course...

The Dead Kennedys

Also, for the XTC fans who've posted, check out The Dukes of Stratosphere. Same band with a different name and a psychedelic twist.

I think I'm in love: )

Love Rev Co, and any of the other Wax Trax artists of that era IE. Ministry, Meat Beat Manifesto, Pig, etc...Chicago, a hotbed of interesting styles.

SKinny Puppy, one of the most inovative bands to come out of VANCOUVER!! in the last 20 years. Completly new sound, copied by many, never duplicated.

Matt(misses the industrial revolution)
