While I don't think it's entirely off base to perceive a masochistic streak in gay conservatives, the rest of us should nevertheless appreciate the heavy lifting they have done on our behalf over the last decade. I don't know exactly how many of the gay rights laws in this country have been signed into law by Republican governors, but I can think of at least four off the top of my head. Bush and even Ashcroft have met with the Log Cabin Republicans; Bush has picked a couple of openly gay appointees and he's proceeding with much more care on the gay marriage issue than he would if they weren't around. Furthermore, I believe he DOES know gay people whom he likes, which is partly what tempers his public comments, which however unsatisfactory, have been quite tolerant for a religious conservative. There is little similarity between the tone of his remarkes and that of Pat Buchanan's cultural war bromide at the GOP convention in 1992. Greater numbers of Republicans, both rank-and-file and in public office, support gay rights, and that can only make things easier going forward. We should WANT both parties to want to compete for our votes, and as that slowly becomes more and more the case and gays at large reap the benefits, we will have gay conservatives and their lonely struggle to thank. In the meantime, couldn't you at least think of them as useful idiots?

George Bush, his father and grandfather are not conservatives at all, more middle of the road to liberal Republicans. W and daddy Bush just cozy up to the right wing for the votes. Senator Prescott Bush ® Conn. the President's grandfather lost his bid for re election. He was against the war in Viet Nam. I just wish they would speak out against right wingers like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, the guys who speak directly to God, so they claim. The Bible says, homosexual acts are against the laws of God. Either you comply or you do not. You can't have it two ways, if that is a simple outlook on life so be it. Bill Clinton, love him or hate him, had the balls to take these guys on. He told them, you use your pulpit to tell people how to vote, then pay your income tax like the rest of us.
