2025 US Median Household Income & poverty rates

The census bureau just released its 2025 US Household Median Annual Income data and it's some of the best on record.

Summary highlights:

$87,460 in 2025 - the highest inflation-adjusted median household income since 1967.

The largest increase was for Black American households, at 4.8% increase. 

Women's income increased 3.2% more than men's incomes, narrowing the gender pay gap to 83.9%, the lowest gap on record.

Official poverty rate fell 0.5% to 10.2% in 2025.  The official poverty rate for children fell to an all time low, and the official poverty rate for Latin Americans fell to an all time low.

I find the figure of "gender pay gap" so misleading. High-hazard, high-overtime blue-collar jobs (linemen, offshore drilling, commercial diving) skew overwhelmingly male and pay massive wage premiums for physical risk and brutal hours. Men also log significantly more overtime hours on average, which heavily skews median annual earnings comparisons.
