How does the point system work on COM?

I'm a newbie here, and I'm a little fascinated by the points system on this site. What activities give you points? What are the point levels that push you from one rank to the next? Are there a list of badges somewhere? Does "reputation" keep going up to infinity (assuming you're not getting dinged)?

None of this is motivating my behavior (is it for you?), but I am intrigued. And I'm sure I could have asked in the moderator forum, but this seemed more fun 🙂
