I'd say let's run it up the flagpole & see if anyone salutes, but...

A plan to build the world’s tallest flagpole — higher than the Empire State Building — to hoist an American flag larger than a football (wouldn't that be nearly impossible to see atop a pole that size?) in the Maine wilderness has divided a small town close to its proposed site.

This seems like a well-intentioned boondoggle to me.

Reminds me of a former colleague, fellow First Nations Health provider from Manitoulin Island, that lobbied for biggest hockey stick in world. It never happened so I assume the majority of the community didn’t give a puck.

I assumed all American flags (1st sentence) were larger than a football. That’s one hella tiny town. 😏

It's probably one of those souvenir replicas you can buy at tourist traps.

What can I say?  Some men are obsessed by the size of their sticks or (flag)poles.

Reading the linked article, I found it does indeed state the flag would be the size of a football, but must rationally conclude that their proof-reading prowess in on par with their building acumen and that they meant to say a football field.

Even then, at the height of the Empire State Building, it would look quite small at ground level. And have they even thought to consider the torque and pull even a gentle breeze might create at that height and on a sail that size, let alone what gale-force winds from a Maine winter storm might elicit?

Plus, the thing will have elevators for tourists as well as a museum to include the names of all America's fallen warriors back to and including the Revolution, a total of about 24 million, less the Unknowns whose names are "known but to God." Unless, of course, one the planners asserts some form of ethereal connection to the Almighty. Which would not surprise me.

To call this plan half-baked would still leave it woefully undercooked. I predict they'll settle for red-white-and-blue themed bowling alley serving local craft beer, and call it a day.

The craft brew curated in Passadumkeag? After which tying one on locals can be heard uttering the next morning, “Ogunquit, after last night.”

Not really...  Height1,250′, 1,454′ to tip  (and you know men always measure to the very tip)

300 feet is a significant percentage of the building's height.  You'd easily be able to see it as it snapped off and went airborn,

😄I concede the math and appreciate the insight. Facts are facts!

BTW, my torque concerns weren't that the flag gets away, but that it takes the tower with it when it goes.

Didn't Irwin Allen make a film with that plot in the 70s?

Not that familiar with his work, but I'll look into it. Only movie of his that comes readily to mind was Towering Inferno.
