The rainbow shirt numbers were part of an initiative by the league on World Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, which is celebrated on May 17. The three players who did not want to support this were left out of the squad and did not play.

Free speech means not only freedom to say what you believe but also freedom from being coerced to say something you disagree with.  If the 3 players were simply sat out for a game, no penalty or loss of salary, then I'm OK with it.  But if the 3 players were hurt in any way for voicing their disagreement, that is a horrible wrong.

The killing of free speech is going to come back on gays and people who want reforms the worst. Minorities and the oppressed suffer from it's absence most as you don't get change unless you're allowed to discuss what needs changing.  Free speech means protecting speech you don't agree with, whether it's not standing for the national anthem or not wearing a political symbol. . Of course it was just an American concept. (RIP).
