HB, I don't appreciate the snide quote about the elderly ladies of Palm Beach County. My mother is one of those elderly ladies, and she has no trouble with the "butterfly" ballot. Some of her friends, however, have problems like Parkinson's, arthritis, the normal hand tremors associated with old age, and cataracts, all of which can make it difficult to poke a tiny hole in a card with a stylus accurately. What a good laugh the nation is having at their expense! No one seems to remember that these same people are the men and women of "The Greatest Generation," who won the War in Europe and Asia and kept things going here at home at the same time. Ingrates!

I tend to agree with Reg here. I really don't understand the all fired importance of knowing overnight, anyway. It might be a little oopsie if they aren't ready to vote when the electoral college is scheduled to vote, but til then there is no reason that I know of for us all to have to know who won. Patience, a virtue, is its own reward.

Hey, Reg, I'm sure your mother enjoys the colorful life of Palm Beach and has lots of laughs. Seems to me it's just that kind of place, as it's obviously intended. I bet she's a classy lady. So ... did you get your piss poor sense of humor from your dad?

Talking about tacky humor about probably older people, did you see Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Star edition last night. One of the comedians was working for an Altzheimer's charity. At one point, Regis asked him what the people at the charity would feel about it if he blew the question, and he replied, "Oh, they'll forget about it." That's the kind of joke that you can only laugh at if you can envision a person who is the brunt of it laughing at it. When I was growing up, if you wanted the best jokes about priests and nuns, you got into joke contests with the priests and the nuns.

Tex, I'm sure it seems to you and a couple of the other big wits who hang out here that anyone who doesn't appreciate your repartee must have no sense of humor at all. You remind me of the straight guys who think that any woman not attracted to them must be a lesbian. If you ever manage to say anything funny, I'll be sure to laugh. By that time I'll probably be on Social Security myself.

... Could not agree more...

Reg.: keep in mind that you don't have to agree with everyone here, and don't take so much so personally. I also have relatives in W. Palm Beach, and believe me, I would not be so defensive about them, their ideologies, idiosyncrasies, infirmities and... voting patterns.

I recall a prof. I had in college who kept reminding us, in a course on the use humour (sardony, sarcasm, wit etc..) in writing English, that humour is often at the expense of others, as a release of tensions and hidden feelings. Sure some things can be seen as insensitive or disrespectful, but humour for humour's sake is very human, and a very legitimate way of expression.

Regulation,

It was a joke. Most of Florida and the election is a joke. The two candidates we had to choose from were and are jokes. The only problem escorts I have are from Florida and they are jokes.

Our country right now is a joke and the USA has been the laughingstock of the world since Bill Clinton stuck his Cuban (illegal in the USA) cigar up some fat girl's private area.

You're a brilliant person, but lighten up. I support the Greatest Generation as do you and I owe everything - including the ability to do this site - to them, but sometimes comedy is not pretty.

However, without becoming jingoistic, at least we can laugh at our foibles. And God bless your Mom.

HB and Adriano, thanks for the advice, but what I do or don't take seriously is up to me. Many of the people who post here regularly seem to me to take the whole subject of evaluating and dealing with prostitutes far more seriously than is warranted for what is no more than a pastime. Voting and respect for the elderly, on the other hand, are issues that I take seriously.

HB, if you don't think that this election is a serious matter I suggest you consider what may happen to you and to this site if Governor Bush does what his father did -- turn the Justice Department over to the Christian Right as a reward for their support. Remember the federal prosecutions of directors and producers of gay adult videos that occurred during the last Bush administration? I do. Get ready for "Bush -- The Sequel."

Hey Reg, I'm sure your call for more lightheartness and joie de sex in our common pastime will come as a welcome surprise to Lovehandle, and others of my fellow-sleazbags who prowl in video arcades of Sin City. Glad to see you're off your soapbox this weekend!

RE: I hate all caps - Don't Knock The Elderly

Regulation,

I have stated before that I get all my news from Comedy Central with Jon Stewart. Maybe you missed those ultra-important posts.

Although, I must say I have a MAJOR crush on Bill Hemmer from CNN. YUMMMMMMY

But please don't start some political hoo-ha here. It doesn't matter which one of these idiots finally gets elected. Either one of them will be gone in 4 years - I'd put money on that.

Besides, I'm moving to Amsterdam and I'm going to convince Arnaud that I'm the person he needs to settle down with. I'm going out to Neiman-Marcus tonight to buy some clogs or wooden shoes or whatever will fit. Probably Ferragamo.

With much affection to you -

CZ, like I said to the other sleazehound, I don't care what you do to yourself. If you guys weren't giving the rest of us a bad name, I wouldn't have a word to say about it.

HB, no one ever thinks he needs to care about politics, until he needs something from the government and can't get it -- or until the marshal with the grand jury subpoena shows up at his door. Four years is a long time. If Bush gets in a lot of people of our persuasion are going to wish he hadn't. I hope you aren't one of them, but I wouldn't bet on it. I like to win my bets.

RE: I hate all caps - Don't Knock The Elderly

Regulation,

The loser in this affair are Americans. I vote absentee because I do not live anywhere long enough and my registration is in one of the most backward states in America.

So, now I'm wondering if my vote even was counted. I imagine my pretty little Chad is lying on the floor being stomped on by someone with too much hairspray. And what about the other 49 states? Like my JOKE stated, the ladies of Palm Beach can keep up with 15 bingo cards but can't punch one voting card? It was a joke, but think about it.

Gimme a break! If Florida can screw it up, imagine what must have happened in Tennessee where the people who know Al Gore the best overwhelmingly voted against him!

Now, I'd demand a recount there bubba! In fact, I'd enough recounts where I'd get elected by my friends. Hell, his headquarters were in Nashville!

Excuse me, I have to order Ann Murray's Insprirational Favorites from CNN. I think my Mother will like the CD for that awful holiday that's coming up. Just a few more hours before Bill Hemmer. I'll bet he has a big dick! But I won't put money on it. I will put a wager on my last offer with you that whichever of these eggheads becomes President will not be president in four years.

And, dude, I'm sorry, 4 years is not a long time and I don't have federal marshals coming to my door because I do not even have a real address.

Hoo,

ROTFL...

I love the bingo comment (must have missed it the first time around, I guess)... definite food for thought -- I know something of that Florida crowd.

This whole Florida thing -- a tempest in a teapot -- turned into full blown hysteria, which has even overflowed onto this august message board. The most interesting aspect -- watching the lengths resorted to in order to steal the election and the justifications for such. The latest -- dems conspiring to disqualify the votes of overseas sevicemen, which may just be the one step too far... Gore and his crowd are truly worthy successors to Bubba and his crowd. And Bush... continues the ineptitude of his GOP brethren as so well demonstrated over the last five years. Both sides and their minions have really gone over the top on this one.

Why is it I feel that... we've only just begun... (where are you Karen?). This is bound for the Supreme COurt and Congress, the final arbiter. So lay back and watch the spectacle... and prepare for the boots of the Bush Gestapo to crush out us defectives (GLBTs) or the Gore Dawn of a New Era spearheaded by his Gay Equal Rights Ammendment, for which, no doubt, he is prepared to be carried out on this shield.

The one amazing fact about this election, as I see it anyway -- the American voter also recognizes the medocrity of these two Bozos... since no candidate got even a weak consensus in what was essentially a two man race. What I still don't understand is why they allowed these two turkeys to be put up when men of quality who offered themselves last Spring were dispatched back to the hinterlands. Such are the mysteries of life. Fortunately, we do get some entertainment out of this if you can bear to laugh. If only Will Rogers were around to offer his commentary.

Sleazebags vs. Rules & Regulations

Reg, it's always fascinating to watch people like you in the throes of the 'Stockholm Syndrome'--a wish so desperate to placate their captor/oppressors that they eventually assume their point of view as their own. Note, please, that I'm not making the usual charges of 'internalised homophobia' and 'self-loathing': your problems are political, not psychological.

Seems to me that in your case, a natural primness has combined with an urgent need to be 'accepted' and 'respected' by the straight world in which you live. The result is a naive exhortation to fellow-homosexuals to 'behave,' and to refrain from giving 'us' a bad name among those who run the world, and providing them with ammunition to oppress us even more resolutely.

Do you really think that sexual sleaziness is limited (or somehow intrinsic) to gay behavior? Why don't you check out a site like Glory Hole Forum (just to name one) & learn how many gals & married couples are into that particular scene? These str8s are NOT imitating gay behavior; they are merely ballsy enough to pursue a form of sexual adventure that has potential appeal to the sexual appetite of ALL human animals.

Hey, wake up and smell the poppers!

This is nothing new. What do you think the 'wife swapping' - swinger clubs phenomenon that emerged from the closet 40 years ago represented, if not the natural wish of straight people to have the same freedom to be promiscuous that legally unfettered gay people have always enjoyed? And were you surprised that New York's famous Continental Baths, after years of being a prime playground of gay licentiousness, reinvented itself as 'Plato's Retreat,' a haven for pansexual frolicking that brought in swinging couples and 'unescorted ladies' from Westchester, Jersey & Connecticut? (These questions are partly rhetorical, of course, since I expect you're probably too young to know what I'm taking about here.)

My point is this: while you have a perfect right to express distaste for arcade/tearoom/park/moviehouse activity on AESTHETIC grounds, you're naive to think that refraining from it will somehow improve str8/gay relations, or keep them from getting any worse.

Don't you understand that straight disapproval of 'gay sleaze' is not only hypocritical, but a just a plausible rationale for antipathies that run far deeper than any one such issue? And if you think I'm wrong about that, explain why the fervent wish of many homosexuals to reach the polar opposite of sleazy sex (i.e. legally recognized marriage) has aroused such fits of fear and loathing that you might expect from GLAD's proposing, say, that fistfucking be recognized as an official sport in the next Olympics.

While we're at it, would you mind sharing with us how you arrived at your censorious-sounding handle?

Let me summon you back to Planet Earth. No one is oppressing me. No one is preventing me from doing anything that I would like to do. The straight majority is, however, preventing other gay men from doing things that they would like to do, including getting married and sharing job benefits with their partners. I would like to see that change. I know that change will be much harder so long as straights are able to use extreme types like you as poster boys for the gay commmunity. You are right -- my problem is political.

I would like to think that my dislike for the kind of sleazy behavior we're discussing is "natural," but in fact it's a result of an upbringing that included the principle that there are healthy and unhealthy ways to express one's sexuality. I'm sorry you didn't have the same advantage.

I've never had a problem being accepted by straights. Your comments suggest that you have had such a problem and that you express your frustration by blaming them (and me). But it's your problem, not theirs, and if you are waiting for them to change so that the problem will go away, you have a long wait ahead of you.

>Hey, wake up and smell the

Hey, stick all the chemicals up your own nose that you want to. Just don't keep peddling the lie that being gay includes an obligation to approve of such trashiness.

Ideologues like you never seem to figure out that politics in this country is all about coalition-building. Dr. King understood that it was possible to create an effective coalition with others who didn't really understand the lives of his people by emphasizing the similarities between blacks and those others, and that is exactly what he did. After his death his successors lost some of that focus and their movement lost strength as a result. The success of the gay rights movement depends entirely on whether its leaders understand that lesson. You clearly don't.

Why do many on the Right oppose gay marriage so strenuously? Because unlike you they realize that it is part of the exact same strategy that King used to undermine segregation, the strategy of emphasizing the similarities. Of course they would not be as upset about a proposal to legalize or encourage some behavior that most straights would find extreme and disgusting. Why would that bother them, since it would play right into their hands? It is when most straights stop thinking of gays as being and wanting to be fundamentally different from them that the inequalities the Right prefers will crumble. Don't you think they know that? I do.

RE: Sleazebags vs. Rules & Regulations

Or how about this as an alternate strategy--one joyously promoted by still another culture hero, the Rev. Boyd McDonald: making straights understand that, left to their own devices, they would be just as sleazy as the sleaziest gay guy anyday!

CZ, you're welcome to try any strategy you like. Just don't expect any gay man who respects himself to go along with a campaign based on the notion that being gay means having sex in public bathrooms, in the back rows of movie theaters, or in the back of some store. We're tired of hearing that crap.

Tampa, don'tcha regognize me?

Things really shouldn't be taken so seriously. Especially on this site.

We're talking Sex here and I never met a boy (over 18) I didn't like! :-)

And everyone else...lighten up on Regulation. God just passed over him when he dealt out a sense of humor. In fact, he may have accidentally left a Nazi uniform in Reg's closet. But I'm sure it was a mistake. Even God can be human.

RE: Lightening up on Regulation

You're probably right, Hoo. Reg is so humorless & literal-minded I'm beginning to think he's actually a lesbian. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. . .)

I was going to answer his last post (a carefully selective non-response to mine, delivered in his usual uptight style) by asking him who ever 'defined being gay' as having sleazy sex. No one on this thread, far as I can see. What I was trying to make him understand was that the allure of sexual sleaze is as potent among straights as it is with gays.

But never mind. I guess he needs to 'define being gay' for himself somehow. Then he can paste the definition on his bathroom mirror & gaze fixedly at it every morning while he's flossing (for the full four minutes.). And I expect 'being gay' for him means an impeccably monogamous relationship & twin be(if not separate bedrooms). All part of his upbringing, you know.

But for all his willingness to answer posts primly & promptly, he doesn't seem too eager to explain why he calls himself 'Regulation' around here. Maybe your Nazi uniform theory explains it, Hoo--as in "You vill obey!!!'
