Escorts, please put yourselves in the shoes of the man I'm about to describe, and tell us what he was up to, or what he wanted, or what I could/should have done.

Clients, please put yourselves in my shoes, and tell me what you would have done under similar circumstances.

This is a real-life story (in fact, it happened only yesterday), and it reminded me once again how awkward I get when faced with a fantasy-come-true:

Yesterday I spent the day in Toledo (Spain, not Ohio), which is an hour's bus ride from Madrid. About 3:35 I staggered into the bus station and bought my ticket for the 4:00 bus back to Madrid, then sat down to cool off a bit before going to the men's room to rid myself of the few drops of moisture that I hadn't sweated out in the 100-degree heat.

Staring dumbly straight ahead and wiping the stinging sweat from my eyes, I saw the bottom 2/3 of a good-looking guy in his twenties walk from left to right across my field of vision. Before he had left it, I said to myself, "He's gay." (This is unusual for me in Europe, as European men have very different ways of holding their bodies, walking, and gesturing than we do, and the signals aren't always clear. In this case, you'd have needed to be blind to miss it.) He was also escort material, in that he was well-dressed, and far better-looking than average.

Finally, I cooled off enough to go to the men's room. And there he was, humming to himself, tweaking his hair, wiping his dark glasses. As I walked in, he shot me a glance in the mirror that I could not have misidentified; I simply peed, washed my hands, looked with horror at my disarranged self in the mirror, and went back to the waiting room. Three minutes later, there he was. He stood a good fifty feet from me, played with his cell phone, but mostly stood there. I'm pretty sure he was looking at me, but I couldn't really be sure, and in any case I'm the kind of person who never, ever, expects to be the object of such glances and so am inclined to miss the few that come my way.

After five or so minutes of that, he slowly walked back to the men's room, looking pointedly in my direction. I thought, "I don't speak Spanish; I wouldn't know what to say, even in English; I don't have a hotel in Toledo; in any case, who knows what he wants?"

Then I stood up, slung my bag over my shoulder, walked down the steps to the waiting bus, and came back to Madrid.

What would be another realistic outcome to this story? Remember: the operative word is "realistic."

An Escort Suggests Several Answers

Will, one of my clients is 74 and manages to find very young men (younger than I, for example), who are not escorts, who are interested in him. He is very personable and charming.

In your instance, it is possible there was sexual attraction on his part.

As you may still be in Spain, I would suggest learning some simple sentences:

"OH LA" (phonetically) would be a slang form of hello.

"NO AB LO S PAN OL" would be a way of suggesting to the young man that you cannot speak to him in Spanish. If he is, indeed, an escort, he would learn how to communicate this with you, if his English was not satisfactory.

Realistically? Given the facts as you presented, I believe the likeliest outcome is what turned out to be the case. Were other outcomes possible? Certainly, however, you were not prepared to make the most of this opportunity, thus I do believe the most likely outcome is what transpired.

Enjoy the rest of your stay in my second favorite European country.

Reality Check

Most Spaniards speak some English, the younger ones often speak it well.

I would have followed and simply said "Do you know when the bus to Madrid leaves?" Then it was open to him to suggest a coffee and a later bus.........

With all due respect, please reread Will's post as he didn't just ask escorts to respond but also asked clients for their input.

Wow Will, that sounds like a hot scene, that I would have responded to, as I now regret letting those type scenes I've encountered in the past go by without taking action. It is obvious that the guy wanted to get into something, but these type scenes are always a little dicey, especially in the heat of the moment. You want to do it, but then again given the publicness of the place and other factors, there is just something that just stops you from going further.

I can't say I would have done anything upon the first encounter in the restroom, but when he headed back there after that long glance I'm positive that I would have followed unless there was some little voice deep down inside screaming "danger" as you really have to be careful in these encounters.

As far as not knowing Spanish, I believe the two of you communciated the basic facts really well. If he was a local, he might have had a place to go or perhaps he was just looking for some quick action there in the bus station. A quick duck into the restroom would have let you know whether he was hustling or was just interested in getting it on with you just because he was attracted to you.

But you know the old saying about hind sight. Anyway, I'm willing to bet that you will never forget it and it will give you some fodder for future fantasies.

Enjoy your stay in Spain! :)

One thing that struck me during the time I lived in London (about ten years ago now) and also when I railed around Europe was European men seem to cruise with more intent to follow through than Americans do. I know that's too broad a generalization, but still I remember that picking up guys on the street was almost a staple of my sex life. While not the most common way to meet men for sex it was certainly a viable option.

I also knew quite a few guys, especially those from small towns, for whom certain public restrooms and other cruisy areas was pretty much THE sexual outlet they had, and a lot of them weren't picky about who they hooked up with. So it's certainly possible that this guy was just looking for a quickie in the loo. He could also have hoped to be paid for it (and he probably would have found a way to communicate how much fairly quickly).

The most useful thing I can probably say to you is that while you're in Europe, respond to boldness with boldness; respond to eye contact with eye contact and hold it. That is often the easiest way to get a conversation going (however broken). Again painting with too broad a brush, they're generally less coy about their intentions than Americans when it comes to sex.

On a tangential note, I made that Toledo mini-day trip myself about ten years ago (not as eventful as yours I'm afraid). I remember the heat and a general arid beauty, but I can't quite piece together what was there, what it was that I had come out to see. I want to say it was one big thing, though there might be other attractions. Refresh my memory, if you would -- besides the boys, what is there to do in Toledo? :7

This sounds more like an academic exercise for you than a real question about what you should have done--I think you probably did exactly what you actually felt like doing. You never say that you were really turned on or wanted to have intercourse (in any of its possible forms) with the young man. It sounds analogous to being presented with a possible bargain in a market when you happen to be passing through on the way to some other goal, and are not truly in the mood to shop. If I am misreading you, however, and you really did want to do something with this young man, then you could have smiled back and let him initiate a conversation in the waiting room; I would not have followed him back into the men's room. Since you paint a picture of yourself as tired, blowsy and not cruising, the fact that he seemed to be trying to lure you into making a compromising move should have made you somewhat uneasy. Single male tourists DO get mugged in men's rooms (and attractive young gay men CAN be criminals), and police may be unsympathetic if they suspect your motives. I think your instinct to just move on rather than satisfy your curiosity (and I think it was mostly curiosity) was correct.

Will,

It's an interesting situation. My guess is that the replies will vary with experience and self confidence (duh)

In my case, I have just begun to look around since I am newly entering an "out" lifestyle and not having as much confidence as some, I have not always been aware of the opportunities. But more recently I have become aware of them and am excited about the prospects of a follow-up. Yesterday I was cruised twice and in fact got the business phone of one of them (very hot younger guy), so i guess there's always hope.

Re what you came to Toledo to see, I think El Greco was from Toledo and you might have been there because of him. His paintings are fabulous and reflect the arid beauty of the area. Also Toledo was the headquarters of the sword making during the medieval period.

A) Franco, it hasn't been duro since Rick Munroe's last post!

B) Now that I am over my embarrassment at misreading Will's post, I simply mourn the lost opportunity he had. But then again, he didn't have a place to go, and probably, like me, he doesn't do it in toilets. So maybe the flirtation, if it was such, had no where to go. But, I guess I would have tried to find out if he spoke English. It is a nice train ride back to Madrid....

C) The cathedral is Toledo is very nice. Didn't many of the events (executions) of the Inquisition take place there as well?
