How is living in San Diego?

Do you live towards the coast in Huntington Beach, or more northeast towards Garden Grove/Fountain Valley? If you live near the beach, the vibe is pretty similar to Pacific Beach.  La Jolla is similar to Newport Beach & Corona Del Mar.

My suggestion is La Jolla. I prefer to live somewhere quiet (that offers easy access to the beach, stores, restaurants etc) that offers easy driving to the airport and other parts of SD. 

There are plenty of condos in the Village of La Jolla, and you should be able to find a rental so you can try out the area. It is calm, not noisy, and the location is very convenient.

I live near the beach in HB.

La Jolla and PB might be a bit too far from my job, but those are certainly nice areas.

I suggest you find a rental property in La Jolla and try the commute. I think of it as being 30-40 minutes drive time (less late at night). I doubt that you will dislike La Jolla, and you may love it, but I can see that the commute is important to you. 

When I was young, I socialised with friends in Hillcrest and often visited Pacific Beach, but I found both too busy and didn’t want to live in either area. 
 

Now I’m old, I just prefer to walk everywhere and in La Jolla that’s easy. Also I enjoy drinking wine with my dinner and then walking 15 minutes to get home.

When I lived in La Jolla, I had to commute to National City. Chula Vista is a bit further south, but that commute was fairly easy considering I had a few options on which freeway to take. Also,a lot of people who live in Mexico actually work In San Diego county so the traffic going north is tougher than going south in the morning (and vice versa in the afternoon)

Wish I paid more attention when I  was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey from July 1967 to July 1968.  I don't remember any older men hanging  around though.probably mistaken for anti war protests.

Is anyone familiar with Redwood Village, in what is referred to as Mid City section of San Diego?

Approximately 3 miles south of I-8, in the vicinity of San Diego State U.   

There was mention of a Little Saigon over there.    My impression so far is the area is safe, quiet and relatively affordable compared to many other areas.

I lived there from 2008 to 2013, then got transferred back home to the east.

 

I loved every minute living there.   I had a nice home a block from the beach in La Jolla.  Wish I didn’t sell it when I left.  The price has since skyrocketed.  I also had a condo in the Shores in Coronado, which I kept and rent out.   Both LJ and Coronado are the nicest places to live in SD.

 

I agree with all comments about friendly people, great eye candy, the best weather and a city more boring than most.

 

but I’d move back in a heart beat.  Retirement is still a good 5-8 years away.
