What's with the absent AOL escorts?

I've noted that in the nyccompansions aol chatrooms lots of escorts seem to log on and then leave their names in the chatrooms unattended. When you try to IM or email them to inquire about setting up something, either there is no response or an automatic reply saying that they are not at the computer.

Two problems with this practice - it's really frustrating to read a hot profile, view an enticing picture on the aol homepage, and then draw no response from the escort. It's even more frustrating in that they are taking up space in the chatroom, keeping others from coming in.

Question for escorts: does this practice of leaving your name in the chatroom unattended really pay off for you? My reaction to it is to avoid trying to contact the escort whose screenname I recognize as one who does that, to avoid future frustration.x(

If only they stayed in the "companion" rooms! I checked out the chatrooms the other day and it seemed as though nearly HALF of the occupants were escorts - and these were the REGULAR rooms. Has everyone become a whore in this town?

 

By sitting in the chatrooms and then going off to the gym, or the grocery, or the hairdresser, or the drug dealer, it allows them to still be out there in the meat of things without having to prop themselves up at the computer all day. The serious ones will have their cellphone in their profile. Just get use to it, it's a practice that isn't going to change.

This is actually worse than picking up the BAR and calling someone in response to his ad. At least when you call someone you (a) hear his voice and (b) can decide whether to leave a message or try someone else, hoping to get a live answer. An email might be read the next minute, the next hour, the next day...who knows? Meanwhile, presumably, the potential client is interested in scheduling an appointment.

 

I do agree that this practice is unlikely to change, though, especially if the advertising is paying off.

The problem is that when the escorts are in the chat rooms, there is no room for anyone else to join and they lose their contact. There is an escort in the NYC chat rooms who has been on vacation in SF for the last week, but he is still active in the chat room for NYC companions. Seems like they are killing their own incentives to me. If they are not going to be available for an extended period of time for chatting, get out and let someone else in. 99 % of the time when you look at the chat rooms in New York, they are full, yet nobody is active.

Very good point, Dick. Furthermore, with about 30 million subscribers, why does AOL limit the room to 23 participants? Just as they log people off after inactivity, they should log off these parking lot guys.

It's been a long time since I've used AOL, but IIRC, you can easily see who is in a chat room without having to join the chat room yourself. There was never much point to joining the m4m escort chat rooms (there was almost always more than one), since very little chatting transpired. Most contact was made by IM.

What's the incentive for an escort to give up a prized spot in a chat room to make way for the competition?

 

I used to do a search of active profiles for the term "escort" if I wanted to see who was online at that moment, and maybe took a quick look at the participants in the escort chat rooms afterwards to see if the search missed anybody. Since the name of the chat room has changed now, perhaps other things have changed as well.

It is not as if there if only one escort available or that one escort is the only one who can scratch an itch. I will wait for a certain escort for a period of time, then move on to another. So, the escort loses nothing by not being there (in front of his PC) while parked in a chat room. He may pick up clients who are interested enough to schedule an appointment with him, but if he's not in the chat room, he picks up no clients because potential clients browsing the people in the chat room don't see his profile, including those potential clients who decide to move onto someone else.

An escort pays for AOL service, creates a profile that's likely to be deleted by the AOL net nazis more than once, perhaps also takes the trouble to create a webpage for potential clients to see his photo, and this is all on your dime? Do you call up advertisers on TV programs you watch and demand they send you a check for the time you had to spend watching their ad instead of the TV program?

That's your idea of a chat room. Again, I don't remember there ever being much actual chatting in most of the sex-oriented chat rooms, so I'd say most people don't agree with you. (That goes for both the "m4m nyc" and "m4m nyc now" rooms, among others.) Is there something in AOL's TOS about not using chat rooms unless you are physically present to participate in any chat? As for making contact through IMs, just send an IM! Unless things have changed dramatically, very often you'll get an automated response from the escort explaining the best method and time to get ahold of him. Voila! You've made contact.

 

Perhaps you should create an "m4m escorts NYC NOW" room for only escorts and potential clients who are sitting in front of their computers. (Oh, excuse me, I forgot my AOL-speak: "m4m companions NYC now.") Can you boot people if you create a chat room yourself? If so, you would have the kind of control over the actions of others you seem to want. One escort told me that he stopped responding to IM's personally (even when he did happen to be at the computer) because the overwhelming majority of people who IM'ed him weren't seriously interested in booking a session, they simply wanted cybersex. So I'm not sure how many escorts would accept your terms in the long run. Perhaps any escorts on AOL could offer their thoughts on whether that would be a good idea.

I do exactly what your talking about...but I will give you my method. Everyones is different, so take this with a grain of salt.

 

When I first started out on this escort/massage thing...it was on aol. I actually used to hang around for hours. Then, when I got an IM...I realized that only 1 in 5 was really interested...and interested in paying. I also found out that 90% of the time....it was for some time in the future....NOT IMMEDIATE.

 

SO, NOW....I spend only part of my day on the computer...but try to stay in the room for exposure. If I get an IM while I am on...I will respond....otherwise its the autoresponder with my phone number. I go through all of the IM's carefully. I try to decifer as much of the "wrong numbers" as possible. The others I email and put on my buddy list. I ask them what they are looking for...to further qualify them...If they dont respond...then I try to catch them and chat while Im online and can see them.

 

I hardly ever let more than one day go by before I answer. That only happens on my day off...when I dont even look at a computer. But remember....my phone is in the reply...If you call...and I can talk...I usually pick it up...just to say hello and talk about availibility...I never know who is on the other end. AND...if you leave your number....I will call back...but only once...discretion is a big deal isnt it?

 

As far as parking lot...there is more than one room..and we create more as they fill up...by the way its 36 now allowed...the advantage is for you to see...who is available these days and to look at pics and to see who is current...Id stay away from profiles that are too vague...and with no links and with no numbers....these are amatuers...if thats what you want..then youll get lucky with one of these guys...
