BecauseISaidSo Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Thanks to all for the great info on this site...I finally decided to join and contribute! I randomly stopped into Spa 27 yesterday, where I'd never been, and asked for a one hour massage. I was happy to take anyone available since the reviews on here have been relatively strong. So I got Noah and went back to the nice room. I started face down, and it felt a little strange but I couldn't quite figure out why, but nice enough. After about 10 minutes, he was massaging my shoulders so his hands were close to my ears, and I realized as a heard like a crinkling sound that he had on latex gloves! I popped my head up to ask if that was the case, and he said yes. I asked him to please take them off. He said he wouldn't. I asked if there was any other therapist there who would massage with their bare hands, and he said most of them always use gloves. He then added that if I were to check most spas around the world, that most male therapists use gloves. WHAAAA?? I obviously knew that was crap since I have had a ton of massages in a ton of countries. The only other time I've had a therapist use gloves was years ago with a female therapist and when I asked her about it, she said she was worried about getting HIV (I'm not kidding). So like that previous experience, I immediately stopped the massage. He wiped off the oil from my back, and I paid for 30 minutes. I was pretty shocked and appalled, and told him that they should at least say something to clients so we can choose whether that's what we want. Are the rest of you on here actually getting massages with them wearing latex gloves?? If so, stop that! That's never happened to me at any other place in NYC. On a positive note, I then walked to Energy Spa, where I had also never been (it was experiment day), asked for an hour massage and was again willing to take whomever was available...and it happened to be Alven! He was always my fave at TSMS but I hadn't seen him in years. We had a great chat and he gave me the usual great massage. So the day ended well, but geez, part of why we all get massages is for the actual human contact!! Jackus and Redwine56 1 1
+ sniper Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 The ine and only time I had a therapist use gloves was when my back had broken out in acne in reaction to having my back sugared. And that was understandable to me. Redwine56 1

d.anders Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 (edited) 13 hours ago, BecauseISaidSo said: most male therapists use gloves IME, in a Physical Therapy setting, which is often a hospital or clinic, and where massage is part of the PT service, the therapists won't touch you without gloves on. Gloves are worn even when taking temperature or blood pressure. I have always assumed this had something to do with Covid. Not only do PT therapists wear gloves, in NYC, the staff is still wearing masks. I don't know if the rules are mandatory, because not everyone follows them. They may only be recommendations. When I get a pedicure these days, which includes leg/calf massage, I've yet to find someone working without gloves. Toe nail fungus and athlete's feet are very common, so gloves make sense to me. I haven't been to a spa setting in a very long time, but I've never experienced gloves there. However, I've never experienced a massage therapist not wash his hands immediately after the work. You are taught the importance of doing this in training. Depending on the number of customers per day, washing your hands often, each day, every week of work, can produce all sorts of problems with hand skin. Many service providers will resort to wearing gloves simply to protect their own health. I'm sure wearing gloves, especially these days, is far more common than we wish to believe. From a health perspective, it really is a smart choice. Real life isn't a porn movie. HE massages usually don't follow any rules. What risks are we willing to take? urbanfetish Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I don’t think I’ve ever had a massage at 27MS with a masseur using gloves. The only time I’m ok with a masseur using gloves is if they give me a prostate massage. Jackus and Redwine56 1 1
Ingress Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 (edited) During the monkey pox outbreak a few years ago, masseurs used gloves. Maybe Noah had some sort of rash or other reason for wearing gloves that day. Edited December 19, 2024 by Ingress Otterlybelievable 1

I've never had a massage with the masseur wearing gloves even if I went a few times during COVID. They wore masks understandably so since germ spread was airborne.
+ sniper Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 My PT uses gloves when he's doing work on my spine, doesn't wear a mask. I had one PT who didn't always but she also usually wasn't going that deep or long and she did sanitize her hands before and after.

Yeah, had he said that HE had a rash or injury so needed to wear gloves, then I would have totally respected that and simply declined the massage and come back another time. Or even if he said he was worried about getting something from me, I could at least react to that. But when he tried to pass it off as totally normal and that I somehow needed to be educated, that's what got me. I don't really know about the more clinical/PT settings, so my surprise was in this more sensual/relaxation setting. Anyhoo, I appreciate everyone's comments and realize the YMMV nature of these things. Redwine56 1

I'm glad he's never used gloves on you...hooray!...but he did on me and I have every right to complain about it.

I have been a client of 27MS since the days when it was known as Sunny Boy, and no masseur there has ever used gloves with me. Jackus 1
