STAY OFF THE ROADS! Our towns out here are not equipped with enough trucks and some cities do not use salt (I know crazy huh?) to make the roads drivable. It's been snowing in Seattle proper shortly after 230pm Saturday afternoon. I am guessing there is at least 3-4 inches of snow already on streets. Bundle up and don't go any where if you don't have too. And for those that might be by the foot hills of the Cascades please don't bring in the gas grills to keep warm, you could die. Blankets were put on this earth for a reason, so use them!

Hugs,

Greg

P.S. Oh yeah and if you use candles don't leave them unattended. Fires are nice but not if it is your home going up in flames.

Hooray for snow! If it wasn't for snow I'd never put up with winter. Did a bunch of shoveling tonight, great exercise and a good way to meet new neighbors.

Snow makes everything so pretty and soft. Seems to add a bit of insulation (I've a flat roof) to my place and certainly helps protect many plants in their winter dormancy.

I like seeing animal prints in the snow, even here in the middle of Chicago I see paw prints of all manner of creatures.

But dang it's cold, thermometer outside my door says 5 degrees at the moment.

Just heard from TY and he said it is the Snowiest he has seen in Years in his "Neck of the Forests" and he has seen SNOW!

There's Not a Shovel to be bought anywhere! Myself I do prefer "Swaying Palm Trees" in the KEYS to anything that looks Frozen other than the occasionl Daiquri! ;-)

Hey seaboy, you don't need Global Warming. Just come on down to

Ft. Lauderdale. It's in the upper 70s and very pleasant. The only problem is getting a flight here. People were stuck in FLL Friday and Saturday with lots of flights cancelled due to snow in the upper midwest and the northeast. We probably have the nicest weather in the country right now. :-) Don't mean to rub it in; just couldn't resist.

I used to live in Boston, so I know how treacherous driving can be on icy roads. Snow never bothered me. It's the ice covered roads, on which you have little control over your steering, that always scared me. Remember a very important rule: IF YOU GO INTO A SKID, STEER THE CAR IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SKID. That will straighten out the car. Steering away from the skid will send you into a spin. It doesn't seem logical, but I've done it instinctively w/o thinking, and it works. Whatever you do, don't slam on the brakes.

Your advice on candles is right on. In South Florida, we're experts on emergency supplies. If you must use candles, use the larger barrel or square-shaped ones, which are stable, not stick candles. It's too late to go out now. But for the future, heavy duty battery lanterns are preferable to candles. Specifically, the Coleman type lanterns that take four D batteries. I have a lantern in each room. The lanterns are bright and better than candles. Just keep a good supply of batteries on hand. It also helps to have a few flashlights.

Stay safe.

The San Francisco Chronicle is today touting Palm Springs as a winter getaway, claiming that temperatures in the daytime are 86 degrees. At the time I read that it was 37 degrees outside, proving that you can't believe what you read in the newspapers. We'll be lucky to hit 60 today.

But I too love snow, and the mountains are covered in it. It's nice to see it, from a distance.

Enjoy the snow, Raul ! :)

I don't mind the snow unless I'm stuck in a blizzard somewhere and my flight is cancelled ... Then I start hating it.

What saddens me more at this time of the year is the shortness of the days. We don't get much sunlight here in Europe in these winter months.

I can't wait till January ... }(

Cheers, Steven ~

Yes from a distance it is quite lovely. In my old apt unit I have a view of the Olympics and in this unit I have a view of the cascades. Oh so lovely but the snow can stay up there. In all honestly though I don't think I would dislike the snow so much if Seattle knew how to properly take care of the ice and snow. For some reason the city refuses to use salt and either does nothing or uses sand. And doing nothing had it's consequences Friday afternoon when two buses just about landed on I-5 with passengers on them. Granted I will admit that they buses should have had chains on so fault also lies with the bus company.

Seaboy I tend to agree. The Guys I know who live in that area go to "The Keys" to get away from it all or Fly out of Ft Laud to "Costa Rica"!

It has over the Year's become very Over-Rated Over Priced AND way to crowded with Touristas! It has definitely become another VEGAS! And definitely Ugly need not apply! I will give it Credit for Gorgeous Hunky CUBAN Eye Candy!

BUT Go OUTSIDE Tourist areas and you see people struggling to pay bills also!

Yeah I Know Tourists are The Economy, I Pass Thru every year and it has definitely turned into a German-EURO Tourist Mecca. ;-)

But it warms up quickly here in Palm Springs. This morning I started playing tennis at 8am in three layers of clothing, and by 9:30 I was down to shorts and a T-shirt.

Still passing thru Oklahoma, right??

As promised, I have lots of video to entertain us... even more after last Sunday with the boys. That is, if I don't wear them out before you get here.... wish that you could swing by and pick up Whip, because David gets exactly that and then some. SO HOT.

A little detour thru Peoria might be nice as well.

Have to warn you though, it is COLD as crap here now. No telling about January though. Could be 75 by then and 16 the next day...

3-6 inches forcasted and it's been snowing since this afternoon. Well I am going to go out and play in it for a bit. If I can't beat it I might as well enjoy it. Actually it isn't that bad I think that it is more of a workout walking in the snow then walking when it is dry out. Have fun boys.

Don't worry Olie, a heatwave is passing through your neighborhood on Tuesday evening. Wouldn't surprise me if some seismic events also happen!

That's the spirit, the only thing worse than winter is being cooped up and miserable indoors, unless you got someone special with whom to do something special. Might as well get out and enjoy it.

Was out earlier running some errands and engaging in a little bit of hot uhhh indoor fun with someone special. Rode my bicycle, was just a couple miles away. I wasn't the only nut, saw a few other cyclists in spite of the 2 degree temperature.

At a stop light a young woman crossing the street WITHOUT a hat, said "Oh my god aren't you cold?" I pointed out that I was wearing two hats, a balaclava, scarf, two coats, AND two jackets, a sweater, two shirts, long underwear, heavy pants, snow pants and the ultimate in warmth, my airforce arctic boots that make me look like mickey mouse.

I was actually sweating.

Raul I've been running around in my Army combat boots. I've only woren them a few times but never in the winter. They cost me about $40 & the cheapest but best damn foot wear I've ever purchased.

I am with you--I just moved to the Pacific Northwest--the snow is brining me flashbacks of when I lived in Wisconsin--and at least there they knew how to keep the major streets clear--and at the very least it wasn't as hilly as here.

With wishes for everyone to stay warm and safe wherever they are.

PS--what happens in 2 months--is it the inauguration or are you moving? You had mentioned something in the past about Chicago.

When I was just a youngster, my Mother was sure that if my feet got wet--I'd catch a cold or worse--actually she still believes this. SO when it got snowy, she made me wear my Dad's army boots. Well they were way too big and I always ended up falling on the ice and injuring my derriere--although come to think of it--I am still falling on the ice even without the boots. I finally told my Mom,'enough of the boots'.

Greg.....I confess. I arranged this so you're acclimated to Chicago weather before you move here. }(

Again, we have another example how a simple harmless comment is turned into some heavy duty issue on the MB.

All I did was kiddingly make a comment to seaboy on how nice the weather is here now, which it is. Then the place is lambasted, but the attack is only partially correct, and quite unbalanced.

Yes, Ft. Lauderdale is plastic paradise, very much like LA. There is lots of attitude. But if you want "ugly people need not apply," then WeHo wins first prize, according to people here who have moved from there. The place is overpriced. However, compared with the cost of living in the northeast, CA, and Chicago, it's still a bargain.

[b/]Cubans make up a large percentage of Miami, not Ft. Lauderdale.[/b] If you want Latino eye candy, we have plenty of it from Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia, and Costa Rica. So you have your cities mixed up.

Despite its failings, Ft. Lauderdale in still in the high end of Out Magazine's top 10 vacation destinations. It's not just a German-Euro mecca. There are tourists here from all over the US, Europe, and South America. Of course, there are lots of people struggling outside the tourist and gay areas. But that's true in most metro areas, in and out of the city.

Ft. Lauderdale is a relatively small very compact city, easy to get everywhere fast and using less gas than in most cities. Most parking is free or relatively cheap compared with the north. Taxis are cheaper. Restaurants are no more expensive than in most of the popular cities. Like anywhere else, you have to know where to go. If you spend all your time on A1A along the beach area, you're going to pay inflated rates. That's true of any beach resort.

Do I have problems with this place? You bet. It's culturally retarded and anti-intellectual. I spent most of my adult life in Boston, which is on the other end of the culture scale. Florida has no soul and no national landmarks, like the Seattle Needle.

But let's not distort what the place is. It does have its good points.

As with most evaluations: balance, balance, balance.

Good move - those stilettos are a real bitch in the snow!
