I think it is a "lost in translation" issue. Not native speakers often don't perceive subtle messages or intent with word choices. I doubt it's meant in any condescending or offensive way. 

At least that's my take on these funny little phrases.

Good point. And I said I was "bothered" and "possibly oversensitive," not outraged and vengeful. I get it and thank you for pointing out the ESL angle. Enlightening post but nuances count ✌🏻

I speak English as my native language and took absolutely no offense. I think it's got more to do with some people being overly triggered. Words are just words. I don't understand people who get upset over the turn of a phrase.
