For anyone who was interested in this thread, I'd like to recommend a book and a new documentary. The book is entitled: "Stayin' Alive: The Invention of Safe Sex," and the documentary is called: "Sex: Positive." The documentary which was just at NEWFEST in NYC, as well as film festivals in Austin, Miami, Baltimore and San Francisco, was based on a memoir written by Richard Berkowitz a few years ago. He, along with Dr. Joseph Sonnabend and the late Michael Callen, were responsible for the first pamphlets which described and promoted "safe sex" practices. Both the book and the documentary are enlightening and a fascinating window into the history and true story of what transpired in the gay community at the onset of the AIDS epidemic.
