Just got out of the theater and saw Mama Mia. OMG everyone did a great job and from I can remember they pretty much stuck to the play. I had so much fun I'm going back on Tues with Boobers to see it. Tonight I went to see it with some of my gays.

Hugs,

Greg

At the beginning of the summer I saw Iron Manadn Sex and the City, both of which I highly recommend.

Last night I went ot see Mamma Mia and could not have enjoyed it more. Everyone did a fantastic job!!! It was just a truly enjoyable campy movie with great music. (I would not be surprised if we start to here a remix version of Dancing Queen done by Meryl, Christine and Julie soon.) The stage version is coming to the city I live in this winter and I would like to see that as well.

The Dark Knight is just a brilliant movie and Chris Nolan has really put a big stamp on this franchise. If he decides not to come back for a third installment, the person who occuppies the director's chair has some really big shoes to fill. As for the performances themselves, the actors did a fantastic job, especially Christian Bale and offcourse Heath Ledger. I for one like many others hope that Heath Ledger gets some sort of Oscar recognition.

The only gripe I have is comparing the past to the present. It seems the inevitable comparison from Heath's characterisation to Jack Nicholson's performance all those years ago has kind of gotten out of hand or at least for me anyways. Many people have ripped Jack's performance as saying it's campy and ridiculous in today's day and age. That's fine as it does come with the territory, but let's not forget that when Jack played the Joker in 1989, overall most people loved his performance and very much like Heath Ledger, many people felt that Jack Nicholson deserved an oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor as well as Tim Burton's version deserving for best picture. Very much how a lot of people feel about Chris Nolan's version as of now. Unfortunately in 1990, the academy overlooked as they always do of the popcorn movies. I wouldn't be suprised if the attitude of today is very much in the same vein to all those years ago.

I just hope that in 20 years from now, if there is still interest in the Batman movie franchise that people still remember Heath Ledger's brilliant performance as they do today.

The Last Mistress - if you like slow-moving French period pictures with gorgeous actors, sets, costumes and great music, this is the one to see. I don't know how widely it's being distributed. In The New Republic last week, Stanley Kauffmann said that it skated the boundary of regular cinema and porn, and having seen it a few days ago, I could understand that sentiment. The male lead is one of the most gorgeous 20-something men I've ever laid eyes upon, and you get to see about of much of him in the flesh as you would see short of a gay porno. Stunning.

I went to see Mamma Mia at the movie theatre with great reluctance. I was nudged a few times to stay awake. When I did bother to pay attention, I was very suprised by Amanda Seyfried who is just plain beautiful to look at on screen. As always Meryl Streep gave a stellar performance and she has that vocal ability to carry a tune which I found very impressive. At the other end of the scale was Pierce Brosnan who was absolutely brutalising in his singing chops, almost Michael Boltonesque. I thought what was missing for Brosnan was the use of a donkey as backup vocalist to compliment his voice. Other than that I was a lot more impressed with the final product as a greatball oddity as it is.

I saw "The Dark Knight" yesterday and all I can say is ....TERRIFIC!

This is perhaps, for me, the best of the Batman series of movies. I've been a big fan of Christian Bale ever since his wonderfully dark turn in "American Psycho" (rent that one, or watch your local TV listings, a truly bizarre film!).

This time around, the film belongs to Heath Ledger, who, based on early critical praise should get an Oscar nomination, and knowing how Hollywood reacts to these types of situations will probably give it to him. His acting is flawless in this sick, evil, psycho role. He is mesmerizing on screen.

However, there are great performances by a great supporting cast but I am puzzled as to how Michael Caine gets second billing as Alfred the "butler"? Must have a great agent and a good team of lawyers negotiating his contracts.

Also, another fun film with lots of special effects is "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with Brendan Fraser, doing his usual hapless, yet, heroic and comic best to save the day. I like Brendan. I know he can do better, and did so in "Gods and Monster" but I guess he must be raking in millions in these big blockbuster films. His next turn will be in "The Mummy; Tomb of the Dragon Emperor."

"Brideshead Revisited" opens this weekend, and I am going to try and see that. I also have "Mamma Mia" on the list this week. Much too hot here in NYC to do much else except sit in a cool movie theater. The line at the Chelsea Cinemas looked like a gay bar with all the guys waiting to get in to see "Mamma Mia" this Saturday! I can imagine this film will wind up like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "The Sound of Music" with midnight showings and sing-a-longs in its future.

Now that the fall is almost here, lots of blockbusters on the way, like Harry Potter, and Daniel Craig's return as James Bond in "The Quantum of Solace."

"No Regret," mentioned above, gets a small review in the NY Times today, where the brothel scenes appeal most to the reviewer.

Another review is for a surfer movie called "Bustin' Down the Door." The reviewer notes: "A rather warmer sensation is in store for admirers of half-naked young men with zero percent body fat, sun-bright smiles and faces so dashing they could turn Apollo green with envy."

I saw "Brideshead Revisited" yesterday afternoon and enjoyed it.

If you are a fan of the PBS mini-series, I think you'll like this film. The mini series was able to stretch the story and include more characterizaton to other characters. This film version is more condensed, and provides more insight into the motivations of Charles Ryder than the PBS series did.

I thought actor Matthew Goode did a fine job portaying Ryder. However, for me, Jeremy Irons performance will always be the definitive version of Charles Ryder. I am sorry to say that, in my opinion, Anthony Andrews portayl of Sebastian Flyte is still the best. In this film, Sebastian is portrayed by Ben Whishaw, who looks extceptionally gay and his petite frame and mannerisms make Sebastian far more vulnerable and sad.

Still, all in all, a satisfying afternoon at the movies.

I also saw Brideshead this afternoon and enjoyed it as well. A few slow parts, but generally moved along well, and the men were lookers, that's for sure. I never saw the TV series so have no comparisons, but in absolute terms I think Matthew Goode is a real stud and Ben Whishaw is hot as well, if you like them willowy and fey -- and you get to see quite a bit of him in the bathing scenes. But one really hot stud who you don't get to see enough of is the actor who plays Julia's American husband.... hot, hot, hot. Reminds me of a young Clark Gable.

Years ago, when I saw the PBS version of Brideshead I loved it. I read the book soon after which made the series come alive for me again. It's a good read. A few years later I did a tour by car of England going to as many historic country houses as I could fit in. I did 3,000 miles by car around the UK and saw quite a lot of them. All wonderful! When I got to Castle Howard, the stand-in for Brideshead, I had to be asked to leave when it was closing for the day. I hated to leave. Go if you ever have the chance. I'm so glad they used Castle Howard in the new film since I remember it so vividly from my visit and loved walking around the fountain.

Aside from that, the scenes in Venice, in the PBS version are sublime. I hope the new film version, which I hope to see soon will be as good.

RE: Tropical Thunder

Agreed. I saw it on Friday. Totally gross and offensive and funnier than hell. Ben Stiller is either wearing a great muscle suit or has really buffed up for this role and looks terrific - and the things he does with his face are hilarious. Robert Downey Jr. in blackface pretending to be his version of African-American is a total scream. The supportings are all superb.

And for all the gay men who read this board and like homogeneous flicks, there is not one starring role for a woman in this film. Just a few brief supporting bits. It is a male-male-male movie, although the "hottie" quotient is not high. But it is vastly entertaining.
