The distinction for use of the term, "ring," belongs to the New York Post. }(

 

Which, so far as I know, has not won any awards recently for its literary style. x(

Actually, the Times used the term "ring" in their headline and stories about Spitzer the week they broke.

My guess is, those reporters in the MSM (mainstream media), who cover such matters, and lazy as they are, simply lapse into the terminology that's been around for decades.

 

That's probably a good thing. Who wants them "covering" The Scene 24/7? x(

I'm not being critical, but just thought I'd mention that the new, more accurate term is "traditional media" (as opposed to the "new media," like blogs, YouTube, etc). Calling them "mainstream" might imply that blogs are fringe, radical, etc. Just a little FYI.

Rick, I definitely agree that "mainstream" suggests they are far more than we think they are and should be replaced, but I also think "traditional" suggests that they are enduring, which is a blessing we don't wish to bestow on them.
