Spin Class For Bears

The world of finance is spinning too fast for a guy like me. I can't understand why a company that one day is worth so much is the next day worth so little. Who decided that $2 a share was the right price? Who decided that this one company was the one the government should intervene to help? Why help this company but not the people losing their homes? I just don't get it. Are there some finace brains here in Hooville that can explain it to me?
