The 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane was a powerful tropical cyclone that swept across a large portion of the United States East Coast in September 1944. New England was most affected, though so were the Outer Banks, the Mid-Atlantic states and the Canadian Maritimes.

THESE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE TAKEN BY THE BRITISH PAINTER KEITH VAUGHAN (1912-1977) IN 1938. VAUGHAN WAS PART OF A CIRCLE OF NEO-ROMANTIC PAINTERS IN THE POST-WWII PERIOD, BUT SOON DEVELOPED A MORE IDIOSYNCRATIC STYLE. CONCENTRATING ON STUDIES OF MALE FIGURES, HIS PAINTINGS BECAME INCREASINGLY ABSTRACT.
