Hi. Something I’ve noticed on Grindr lately is someone saying hi and when you reply they claim that you are either not replying or that their app isn’t working. They then give you a phone number and ask you to text them.

This has happened to me a few times over the past few days. I smell a trick or scam but have no idea what it is.

Anyone else have this happen? Anyone know anything about it?

Thanks!

It happens constantly. It's bot activity. The intent is to get you to call the number because for land-lines at least you’re unwittingly calling a number that charges your account per minute, sort of like the old porn phone lines.

I don’t know what the catch would be if one calls from a mobile phone - perhaps the same?

I report each one I receive

It’s so irritating ...and they seem to mostly come from “taps” lately, and these bots even seem to have their green icon off indicating not online? But still bugging/messaging me.

This I DO report.

Have any of you received a message on Grindr from a military man looking to start a relationship? He’ll send several love messages and say he’ll be returning from Afghanistan soon... It was fun until he wanted to send me gold that he confiscated in enemy tunnels... On a positive note, I’ve met some very nice local men on Grindr.

Yep! Have had several of those contacts. Instant block on those guys.

Yes...”have you ever had a relationship with a military man?”, etc.

Buddy had bad luck on Grindr attracting youngsters needing money to buy their "college books",

Not sure if my friend ever found any enjoyment from these charity case quasi friends. Sometimes I worried how these dudes would just show up at his door. That would freaking drive me nutz. Kind of scary.

I find a lot of guys on Grindr interested in a generous guy. Some of the best guys I have ever had have been just normal cute guys needing some extra cash. Never had a single problem other than the occasional no-show or a text needing $50.

A couple are weekly regulars still.

Certainly not saying it's risk free or you won't have similar results. Just my own experience.

Yes, several times.

I can only go by my own experience but I find this hard to believe. I've never found anyone on Grindr looking for generosity. I notice many 20-somethings looking for other 20-somethings. But that's about it.

I used to report them. But I wouldn't block them to see what action Grindr took. Weeks later the message would still be showing. I'm assuming Grindr did not delete their account. This may be a change since the Chinese bought Grindr.

It seems to me in the past before the Chinese owners, these fake accounts were deleted. But now I block without reporting.

Oh and I don't know if it's just on Grindr Extra. But my texts show a read receipt when they've been read. The bot chats don't ever show my text being read.

Now the military guy in Afghanistan does read the texts as he has to reply back.
