Maybe many already know about this, but I was so pleased that I thought I would share the info in case others don't. My LCD TV went on the blink shortly after the warranty expired and it appeared that the repair was impossible as they don't provide spare circuit boards to repair shops. SO I was out $900 after only a year and a few weeks.

But, since I had purchased the TV on an American Express card, they double the manufacturer's warrant. So I was in luck after all. It was easy to put in a claim, and they refunded the full value of the TV without deducting for the time I had used it.

Now I watch the Yankees on a nifty 42" plasma TV that was only $300...after my $900 refund. Strangely enough, when buying the new TV, I forgot to use the AMEX card!

(Oh, BTW, the piece of junk TV was a ViewSonic brand.)

At first I was ready to chime in with annoyance about past "Extended Warranty experiences. The ones they sell at the stores themselves are usually even more worthless than the paper they sell them to you on.

One little scratch or discoloration and they call it physical damage nullifying the ntire warranty. It's a huge joke and has been annoying the crap out of me over the years.

WOW. I had no idea. Well thank god AMEX has a few more redeeming qualities. I always remember growing up seeing those commercials for Visa, "and they don't take an American Express." When I switched to AMEX I finally realized how many places really dont accept it.

I'm already high ranking with them (which scared me when they said I was on Black Card track after a month of spending) but is their warranty policy specific to a minimum level or is anything purchased with AMEX at any status eligible?

The reason more merchants don't accept AMEX is because they charge more per transaction than Visa, MC, etc. who are looking for volume.

AMEX is not my favorite company but they do have some benefits.

Thank you Mr. Munroe ... is there anything else on tomorrow's quiz? Perhaps the chapter on not using Word to type posts? LOL

LOL and yes KMEM I got that. First time I realized it was when I went to this Mom and Pop franchise food place. Heard him scream some obscenities in a foreign tongue broken with "American Express" and "four percent."

From then on I got the hint. LOL.

Well, at the risk of another bitch slap (which felt good, btw; I needed that), tomorrow's lesson will cover oxymorons and the first example will be "Mom and Pop franchise." :p

Mom and Pop's can buy a franchise ;)

For the past several years I only use the American Express card and have had 2 appliances replaced by them using their protection plan.I also use their membership rewards program which I find better than most programs offered by credit card companies.

One thing I find interesting though is that I accept American Express,Visa and MasterCard payments from my clients to pay their monthly statements and Visa/MasterCard charges me a higher rate when a client uses a card from a reward program.American Express does not.

Well, yes, but then they are no longer a "Mom and Pop." From wikipedia:

Mom and Pop businesses are small or micro businesses that are family-owned and family-operated. People who speak of Mom and Pop businesses often refer to the unique perspective offered by patronizing a family business. Some encourage the unknown experience of entering a Mom and Pop establishment over patronizing franchise businesses, which typically offer comparable stores and similar consumer experiences, regardless of location. For example, Mom and Pop businesses are often highlighted in travel guides, because patronizing a family-owned and operated business allows a traveler to more fully experience and understand the people of another culture.

Slap away. :p

enough said. How many of THOSE have been taken down even related to these boards over the past year because of the unreliable nature of the verification process.

Mom and Pop and mean a lot more than one person's eloquent definition. As we all know, all franchises do not run the same. Personally, I have always defined a Mom and Pop store as something ran by a small family or couple and not dominated by corporate greed.

Who would have thought that this innocent little thread could lead to bitchslapping? Notice that I didn't do it!

And isn't this site a mom and pop operation, just without the mom? Or is deej a part-owner? :)

I always use American Express when I am worried about the possibility that a product will need to be returned or a service charge cancelled, because whenever I have had that kind of problem, I have simply called AmEx, and they have always taken care of it for me.
