The news today that Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs was not surprising, in fact, it earily patterned the death of her muse, Marilyn Monroe. What was less expected, at least for me, was the revelation she was using till the end youth-enhancing drugs, injected intramuscularly I believe, to enhance her physical image. What an irony, the same drugs that contributed to killing her prematurely were intended to extend her longevity.

The less salubrious details were even more disturbing. Her high temperature days before her death was probably caused by an infection brought on by an abcess in her buttocks which, according to the medical examiner of Fort Lauderdale, was in turn caused by the injections of these youth enhancing drugs. He also noted severe scarring in the buttocks.

I wonder how many people are looking at themselves tonight and wondering where their pill and drug regime is taking them. Anna Nicole Smith's sad end is a cautionary tale. Of course, the extraordinary circumstances of her son's death, her daughter's birth, and the pressure of international scrutiny of her every move, probably only exacerbated her depressions. Not everyone faces these challenges. But her reliance on drugs to deal with these problems was surely a fatal error.

While Anna Nicole had about 12 different drugs in her system, the only one reported to be at toxic levels, to my knowledge, was Chloral Hydrate. Chloral Hydrate is the drug that people use to slip someone a "mickey finn". Basically a tasteless and odorless sleeping pill, this was the drug used to shanghai sailors and it was the drug which caused Marilyn Monroe's death. Since it is so easy to slip this into someone's drink, I am startled that they have come out to say definitively that this was an accidental overdose.

It should be noted that Chloral hydrate is not a frequently prescribed medication anymore. One would expect some further investigation into how Ms. Smith and this drug came together.
