Showtime will be starting a miniseries about the life and loves of Henry VIII. While I am sure that historical inaccuracies will abound and the standards of some other biographical movies about Henry will not be met, I can't help but think this will be pleasant diversion with some hot beefcake from the network which brought you Queer as Folk.

Henry was 22 when he married Anne, so at least the young buc potrayal is more accurate that when Richard Burton played in "Anne of a Thousand Days".

Sorry, Dick, but Henry was 42, not 22, when he married Anne Boleyn in 1533. He had already been married for 24 years to Catherine of Aragon when he divorced her to marry Anne of the Thousand Days.

My bad...he became king in 1509 and was born in 1491. I got these numbers confused.

So, this Showtime piece is truly fantasy as Jonathan Rhys Meyers is only 30.

Henry was notably well built and athletic as a youth, but he was taller than Jonathan and blond. By the time he married Anne, he was bloated; he was also old enough to be her father.

Henry, and many of the Tudors, Mary Queen of Scots for example, was quite tall and athletic and I recall reading that he managed to stay quite fit into his 40s when he married Anne Boleyn and then axed her head before 1000 days of marriage. Some type of accident lead to the slowing of his athletic endeavors and soon after the death of Anne Boleyn in 1536, he began to gain weight. His subsequent marriage to Jane Seymour immediately after the execution of Anne Boleyn saw Henry as still fit, but subsequent marriages to Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Katherine Parr occurred when he had attained the girth that most people recall when trying to visualize Henry VIII.

By the way, Henry was 42 when he married Anne Boelyn who was anywhere from 20 to 33 at the time. Her age is a matter of some dispute but since 1501 is a date frequently used as the year of her birth, Anne Boleyn, though younger than Henry, was unlikely to be young enough to be his daughter.

Interesting that Henry was probably a descendant of the Lord of Rhys and now is to be played by another Rhys of sorts.

Most histories now seem to agree on 1507 as her birthdate (though no one can be positive), which would make Henry sixteen years her senior, just barely old enough to be her father--his first legitimate child was born when he was 18.

Who the fuck is looking for historical accuracy. Would you rather he be played by Nathan Lane?

I think Nathan could pull off the eating the turkey leg part but it is hard to envision even an actor as talented as Mr. Lane, pulling off the lust and animal passion for women that Henry exhibited without at least having a passing interest in the fairer sex.
