A coach of a high school basketball team in Maine gave a speech to his team in which he stated something to the effect that the game was about which team had the bigger balls. Each team member was called to come forward and place his hands in his own pants, ostensibly feeling his own balls. All but one member of the team did so. The team won the game. The coach was fired for this and admits now that this was a mistake. As far as I can discern, there was no nudity or exposure and nothing sexual, just a hand into one's own pants in the locker room.

This was the varsity team so the boys were probably 16-18.

Should the coach have been fired for this act alone. There is no indication that he had any difficulty before this.

Well I'm no prude, God knows, but I wonder if the coach is sane. What a stupid thing to say, especially if he believed it. And how did each person feeling his own testicles prove that their team had bigger balls?

"Balls" as a metaphor for courage or strength of will is a common figure of speech, but if the coach takes it literally, perhaps he is not intelligent enough to be teaching high school.

"Normal locker room banter" my ass. I agree with Kjun. I've had coaches like that and have always hated them. I wonder how the coach treated the team member who didn't want to do it. I wonder how many team mambers didn't want to do it, but did it because the coach required them to as the article states. I think that the fact that school administrators found out about it means that not all players were ok with it. How do you think that the administrators found out?

I think that what the coach did was dumb and stupid and I don't mind that he was fired.

I agree that this was probably not the coach's finest hour, but to be fired for this one incident seems excessive. I am assuming there were no other incidents but the timing of his firing indicates that this was the inciting event in his being fired.

As for how the administrators found out, a small school in a small community. One players tells one friend and off the story goes. I understand the coach was going to quit anyway because he had a busy schedule and he said he had too many balls in the air.

Now had the boys been 18 or over (adults) and didn't want to feel their balls I would have been more then happy to lend them a hand }(

That's easy for an armchair quarterback to say, but unless you know the exact wording of the contract he signed you really don't know.

It's pretty easy for me to imagine a coach/teacher's contract having language that might forbid forcing students to feel themselves up in front of classmates/teammates.
