I had a rather exciting evening last night and after the two escorts left couldn't get to sleep right away so turned on the TV and watched for the first time an episode of Judge Judy. I have seen her interviewed on Larry King once and thought she was pretty vulgar and ill-informed (she stated that a man interested in a 16 year old was a pedophile) but watching her in her role as a judge just made me laugh.

The show purports to be based on real cases. What is not stated is how closely Judge Judy follows the way the cases were disposed of in court. I concluded she just comes out where the cases were decided but does it in her own way, however fanciful that may be.

The case that amazed me concerned a young couple that had joint custody of a young child of the wife from her former spouse. Her current spouse didn't work but stayed at home to raise the child and the second child which he had with his wife. The wife was at school full time to get a degree. Both were in their early twenties. The husband was charged with assault against the former husband and damaging his car.

Apart from the merits of the case, Judge Judy could not get over the fact that here was a stay-at-home-dad who was not in the work force, living off other people (the grandmother provided the house it seems and one kid was registered in preK, some state -run program). In one aside, Judge Judy said to the black court attendant, "no wonder all these people are trying to get into our country", an obvious reference to the defendants immigrant roots. She kept yelling at the guy to get a job, and when he said that might interfere with his quality of time with his wife, Judge Judy wasn't buying any of that. He pointed out that if he worked at night, (Judge Judy's suggestion) and his wife was at school all day, he would never see her.

Then she attacked the poor guy for living off his wife's grandmother and taking advantage of the state's program to assist young families by provding a space for young pre-kindergarden children while the parents worked or were at school. The child who was using the program was the one who was subject to joint custody and only spent 3 or 4 days a week with this family.

In Canada, Judge Judy would be removed from the bench for her conduct in this case alone. First for her anti-immigrant bias. Second for her anti-family bias where she worships at the alter of work and families be damned. And third, for attacking a government program aimed at getting people educated so that they can be useful members of society while still recognizing that some face difficulties with children and other responsibilities.

She (Judge Judy) is just a joke! x( Although I understand she makes a very good living off providing this kind of entertainment.

I think the Drudge Report had an article where it said that she makes more money than Justices of the Supreme Court.

She does go over the top....but that's why a lot of people probably watch her.

I saw the case you mentioned and your observations are correct.

I believe Judge Judy was on the list of the Top 20 richest women in show business with a net worth of 93 million dollars. I do not think Judge Judy is too worried about what her critics say as she is definitely having the last laugh. I would bet she has more supporters than many of us would like to believe.

Ultimately, her show no more reflects the Judicial System than the MacKenzie Brothers reflects Canadians or for a more up to date reference than Gray's Anatomy reflects the medical profession.

I agree though, I find her really irritating in the snippets in which I have seen her.

I put her in the same catagory as Jerry Springer. If this farce is shown overseas, it does nothing to aid the impression that many people have of the US these days.

Next we'll see "The Decider" appoint her as one of the "Supremes"

While courtroom shows on television may not accurately represent our justice system here in the states they do very often have really hot bad boy defendants who need to come by my place for lessons in etiquette. :)

Come on guys, doesn't anyone else here want to give those low rent weasels a good spanking?

I have to agree with Cash that the kid who followed the hapless couple that Judge Judy was berating had thrown a chair at a neighbour's car as she drove by and I thought he was sort of cute. I definitely would have sentenced him to my chambers for a spanking were I in Judge Judy's shoes and I suppose that would have had me removed from the bench as well! :7
