The Godfather of Soul has left us, and of all days Christmas!

I remember growing-up with "I Feel Good", and his rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well.

What a loss on this day of giving...

This is a sad, sad day. Overlooking all the spousal abuse, James was a true performer and a true artist. One I have always admired.

Wow, I can't believe that he is dead. James Brown is one of those people who I never thought of dying. I'm not sad because 73 is a ripe old age to live to, but I will really, REALLY miss him. The next time that I'm with some friends I'll make sure to do a toast to the Godfather of Soul.

James Brown had a long and enduring connection with Montreal where he often appeared to entertain his fans. In fact, he had an engagement to appear this coming January 3rd at the Metropolis, which many expected would be his last appearance. I myself remember seeing him at the Esquire Show Bar on Stanley Street in Montreal in the 1960's, where he often appeared, as well as the Limelight nearby. He later appeared in larger venues including Place des Arts when his career really took off with his mega-hits. In his largest show in Montreal, he attracted 30,000 fans in 1969 at the old Expo site. He truly was one of the giants of American soul music.

We had a discussion about James Brown Christmas Day.

Here's some JB music trivia...

Back in the early '90's, it was mistakenly reported that James Brown had died. After an uproar, retractions came flying out.

From those reports, two huge club hits were spawned:

LA Style's "James Brown Is Dead"

From the Dutch, Holy Noise's "James Brown Is Still Alive"

I was too young for the whole exstasy movement.

No surprise at all.

He also had two (not one) bookings for New Year's Eve. He was called the hardest working man in the business for a reason.
